During my many nightmares and other not so harmful dreams, I frequently dream that I need to call out for help but have little or no voice. This leaves me feeling afraid and insecure. The probable analogy is that I am not being heard in day to day life but I can't really say this to be true. Sure my almost 13 year old son has selective hearing, but my marriage is happy and communication is good. I wonder why I can't speak up and call out for help in my dreams. Any ideas?

Crying isn't a sign of weakness. It's a sign of having tried too hard to be strong for too long.

Hi,
This is a variation of the "sleep paralysis" dream.
It is usually caused by your sleeping position and has very little to do with psychological problems.
The dream most often happens when you sleep on your back or belly. The dream frightens you awake with the "idea" that you can't defend yourself.
Thanks for this!

Only problem is that I never sleep on my back or belly. Only on my side. Although being frightened awake because I can't defend myself makes sense. I didn't wake up from last night's dream, but I remember it clearly. And I needed to call out for help but couldn't.

Hi,
You may go to sleep on your side, however we change sleeping positions many times during the night and the dream you describe usually hapen when you sleep on your back or belly. The reason for the dream is that when you sleep on your back breathing becomes difficult after some time, also when the dream mensions talking or trying to shout it means that the mouth is dry.
"I didn't wake up from last night's dream"
The only way you can remember a dream if you wake up, since dreams are dreamt to achieve degrees of lucidity. You woke up OK but it is the waking up you dont remember!
Thanks for this!
