Yes, I have had these feelings before. And when I was younger (like in elementary school) I would have this image (I was daydreaming) of me riding a bike pass my school and then I fall off the bike onto the ground. And when I fell, I could feel it. It was so weird. I wonder why and how this happens? I haven't had them in a while though. I can only remember me having them when I'm laying down. Thanks for posting this, Suzzie. I thought I was the only one who experienced these feelings. Now I know that I'm not alone.

This is actually pretty common and is recorded as happening as we pass from one dream state to another, typically when we first go to bed or just before getting up--like very light to deeper sleep or sleep to a waking stage. Less often it might happen during the night, as we go in and out of REM sleep. We do become consciously aware of this shift and, startled by it, wake ourselves.
Mostly a nuisance because for some it can become a habit and cause sleep disturbance. It can also just be plain scary. |

These sensations of falling whether when awake or asleep do convey some meaning. When occurring just as one is about to fall asleep it is referred to as a hypnogogic jerk – a spasm which startles one awake and is very often described as a falling sensation. Since this is not something that is part of the natural body’s way of functioning, it indicates a situation in which one’s thinking is incorrect. What is incorrect is the individual’s perception of failing in some situation in their life, that is, having a sense of not living up to expectations – one’s own or that of others. When it happens just before sleep, the indication to the sleeper is that they are in a position (in a bed) in which God gives them the right to peace of mind (in the form of sleep) yet an incorrect perception of some failing on their part is preventing them from attaining this peace of mind. The sensation of falling is a message. [Where in life do you think you are not performing up to par? You are being too hard on yourself. Scrap the idea and the falling sensation will cease.]
When it happens while wide awake the indication is that you see yourself functioning and thinking with full awareness when you have the perception of failing in some situation or area of life – but your thinking is still in error. Your method of stopping the sensation is to wake up or to sit up, that is, experiencing this problem of “falling” can be stopped simply by coming to a higher state of awareness. Acquiring more knowledge and understanding of the sensation gives you such higher awareness. Many people find that if they allow the fall to continue it can lead to a state of lucidity. Sometimes what we think of as being our failing can lead us to a clearer understanding of reality. What is a failing to us may not always be a failing to God. Trust the message where incorrectness in your thinking has been given you. Each type of fall conveys its own meaning so I will not go into falls in detail here. |

I will get those from time to time but I've never jerked myself awake, despite the fact that I always hit the ground. Generally for me falling in my dream will be during a driving dream or a flying dream.
