The current batch of meds I'm on do a good job of keeping me asleep but in the process of getting there I have these horrible waking nightmares that I keep forgetting to mention to my pdoc. They are horrible. The meds make make it so I struggle to wake up out of the nightmare. They always happen just as I'm trying to fall asleep. Last night one of them was my son screaming for me to help him but because of the meds I couldn't wake myself up. It was a dream, my son is away with my ex. Then I struggle awake and I can tell that I'm having a hard time waking up. I've had to actually get out of bed to avoid falling right back into the same nightmare.

I seem to have the nightmares more when I have an empty stomach which really sucks because one of the issues I'm having is weight gain from the antidepressant. I've been through so many antidepressants and this is THE ONLY one that works for me. I know I just have to deal with the nightmares. I do need to mention them to my pdoc.

I just needed a place to vent.

Remeron 30mg - only antidpressant that works for me - causes weight gain
Lamictal 100mg - keeps the Remeron from making me manic even though I'm not bipolar (ironic) - by itself this med actually makes me depressed
Klonopin - 1mg at night
Topamax - currently 0 because at the higher dose it was causing gastrointestinal upset. Hoping to go back down to a lower dose to counter the weight gain from the remeron as soon as my stomach settles down.
Naltrexone - stops self-harm urges

Write the dreams down for your pdoc.

:: Also ::
If the mania is so bad you are needing a stabilizer med to go along with your antidepressant, then by default you're bipolar.

Have you tried adding a waterpill to counter the anttidepressant's weightgain?

You might want to read up on your meds to see if nightmares might be linked to one of the drugs!!

Missbelle - if you look at their About Me page, you'll find Bipolar disorder AND childhood trauma, both of which have nightmares as a major symptom.

Oh and the nightmares you're describing, TW, sound more like Theta visualizations of your fears related to not being able to wake up. Mandamay has those from time to time. Maybe ask your dr about something that doesn't knock you so far out you have trouble waking up?

Medkev, nope I'm not bipolar. It's a chemical induced mania. I had that discussion with my pdoc. I've NEVER been manic. I've never had any manic symptoms ever. The only time I had any mania whatsoever was on the Remeron. You have to have non-chemically induced mania to be bipolar or else everyone who takes uppers or stimulants would be bipolar!

I'm female noticed the difficulty with pronouns.

I will definately talk to my doc about them. Actually writing about them has made me realize how often they have been happening.

I wish it was water weight. The first time I went on Remeron I gained 25 pounds. It makes you crave carbs. It's the biggest reason people stop taking it.

I really appreciate everyone's feedback!

Sorry I didn't see the reply earlier. Got buried.

Even chemically induced, if you're not bipolar your body would naturally moderate the amount of mania you have. Having to take the stabilizer actually should be a flag to check again, as bipolar isn't something that once you're cleared from you don't have to worry about. I was depressive for years, but it wasn't until my 4th year in college when I had my first full on manic episode that I realized it was more than just depression.

I don't know, I'm 41 and the only time I ever had any mania was on the Remeron. I've never had manic episodes.
