I am a college student and I have not slept since Friday night (I slept like 2 hours that night from 10pm-12am). Tonight will make it 3 nights without sleep (assuming I don't sleep again). Is that a reason to go to the ER? What will they do there? I have been having auditory hallucinations, no visual ones...yet. I do not have any caffeine in my body, I am not on drugs, and I have always had sleep problems but it's never been this bad. I saw my T today and she said we may have to consider going to the ER, and told me to check in with her tomorrow and if I still haven't slept then she wants me to go. I am just wondering if it will help at all, I don't really think the ER can do anything for me.

I have PTSD and I do see a psychiatrist and psychologist every week. I am currently on the medication merry-go-round until we find something that works. I have used melatonin in the past but it is not working now. I have tried trazadone, sertraline (zoloft), prazosin with the sertraline, seroquel, and most recently mirtazapine (remeron). They've all had unwanted side effects, even if some of them did help me sleep. The mirtazapine I am still on because I started it on Thursday last week, however it is not helping me sleep at all.

What should I do? Can the hospital actually help me at all? I hate hospitals...

They can give you some strong intravenous drugs to knock you out for like fifteen hours, which is probably exactly what you need at this point. And also, they may consider sending you to a sleep clinic or neurologist, because this could be something more than a simply psychological problem.
Thanks for this!

I don't know. Would they run tests on you? They might need to check on your body and brain, not sleeping could be screwing up your body and you don't even know.

I have no idea. I think what they would do is just give me a prescription for some strong sleep medication and send me on my way. I can't imagine that they would keep me for any reason...that's why I feel silly going to the ER for it, but I can't get in to see my pdoc any earlier this week so it seems to be my only option. I don't know what to do. If I don't sleep tonight I could always lie to my T but I don't really want to. I just want to sleep...

Just go to the er. They'll make you feel better. Also, sleep deprivation can cause dehydration and such so it might also do you good to get some fluids and vitamins in you pretty quick before you drop. And also trust me, after losing this much sleep you'll want to be medically knocked out. At least for me, if I lose a lot of sleep, when I finally do go to sleep I go into a sort of half sleep and have disturbing dreams and get nauseous and its just miserable.
Thanks for this!

Thanks for the advice Valentine. I will go tomorrow if I don't sleep tonight and will report back about what happens whenever I get back, assuming I don't sleep tonight. This really sucks though, it's finals week here and I'm freaking out about missing my finals over this. Such bad timing... It'll be a rescheduling nightmare, so I hope I sleep tonight for not only my health but also so I can just take my finals and get them done...

I didn't sleep last night. Went to the ER today, they told me to increase my mirtazapine to the max dose. I just increased it to the mid dose last night and it didn't do anything. In fact, I've read up on it and mirtazapine is less sedating at higher doses, so I don't know what this doctor is thinking. The lowest dose is what I started on and obviously that doesn't work. I'm freaking out. I need to sleep. I'm having auditory hallucinations and I'm just waiting till I have visual ones. I know I won't sleep tonight on the high dose of mirtazapine unless some miracle occurs. What the hell am I going to do? I'm just supposed to wait until I see my doc on Thursday? I have finals all week, I need to sleep.

Hi Focus62, what you are going through must be awful. I cant believe the ER was so unhelpful. Have you tried to go back and ask them for a sleep medication? Did you try doing some exercise? I hope you will be able to get some rest very soon. Take care

Try Meditation if you can, concentrate on slowing your mind down. You sound a bit hyper in your posts.

Avoid computer, TV, or other media one hour before bed time. Start resting your brian 2 hours before bedtime. If your hyper active right up to bed time, your going to have problems getting to sleep.
