I'm so fed up with this. They range in severity from
Just psychological nightmares, situations etc to very violent massacre horror film style.
They are always very vivid and I'm so fed up with them. I know I move a lot in my sleep but I don't know if the movement is caused by, or causing the nightmares or nothing to do with it.

I have enough sleep problems as it is so I'm really fed up with this because it's getting to the point where it's nightly now. I've always had them but at least had breaks from them but now it's months and months of solid nightmares.

I always wake up in a panic and have to check on people who were affected in the dream.

I don't watch or read horror, I've tried relaxation techniques, I've tried the whole thing of trying to pre think a situation before sleep etc, I don't know what to do anymore but I'm pretty sure that waking up on a borderline panic attack day after day can't be good for me :/

I also sufer from nightmares. I feel like I am not only going through severe depression or sadness or anxiety during the day but that I can't even get a break while I am sleeping. I also have sleeping issues and have to take meds just to sleep. I have horrible vivid scary and sad night mares. I wake up in a panic and it takes me a few hours after I wake up to get them out of my head. About six months ago I woke up from a great dream. I woke up laughing. This is the one time in my 43 years that I remember waking up happy and laughing. I cried out to God and said how wonderful my life would be if I could wake up like that each day. I hope you feel better.

I too was plagued by horrorific dreams. they would me very shaken up. My Doc put me on Prasosin, which cleared it up, what a blessing. I still yell and kick around at nite, but I don't remember anything. Maybe this would be an option for you.
Thanks for this!

I know a couple of people who have nightmares from some of the meds they took. The main one I heard about was Abilify, but I think there's more.
Thanks for this!

Lots of different kinds of medications cause nightmares. Maybe you could check back with your doctor and see if trying a different type might ease the severity of the nightmares.

Thanks for the replies, I've thought about it being linked to meds but to be honest I've always had them no matter what meds I've been on, and I've tried a lot of meds it's just they're every night at the moment not every few nights.
I've still not found a sleep med that works for me either, I take them and am still just as wide awake hours later

Hmm, it sounds like you're suffering from a nightmare disorder of sorts- I read about such a thing, I forget exactly what it's called. Perhaps a therapist might help you sort it out, or maybe there's a med that can block the neuron receptors that is causing this to happen.

I completely identify. I too suffer from nightmares whether I am on meds or not and they go from varying degrees of disturbance to outright violent horror. And most include my ex husband.

I also suffer from nightmares every night just as you described. I move around a lot and am jolted awake by awful things that occur in the dreams. I snore loudly and feel very sorry for my partner because I keep him awake. I was lucky enough to go to get a sleep disorder study but the results only showed that I have sinus congestion but they said it wasn't serious enough to be considered a "disorder." I don't think I had nightmares while in the study though and slept very lightly because I was nervous about the cameras. I would suggest getting a referral to a sleep disorder center if your insurance covers it and if you think you can sleep the way you normally do but at a sleep center.

Thanks, I'm in the UK, we don't have insurance, we have the NHS instead. GP just basically says tough bananas, get on with it. I know from sleep apps I move a lot and I know sometimes I snore, I have a type of facial neuralgia that mimics sinus problems :/

I've heard of sleep centres, but only place I've heard of them in the UK are for like university studies that you are signed up for that look into certain things and I don't even know how they are recruited

I'm sorry. I hope they stop soon. I don't have any advice on it besides--Is prazosin an option where you live? The US military has been studying it extensively for use in PTSD flashbacks and nightmares. Works pretty well for nightmares.

Vans1974 I wish they worked for me

I don't know justbeingme80, I've not heard of it. I'd probably have to ask my GP coz my psych seems to be anti- anything not in use for years. He won't consider anything experimental or new.

I took prazosin and it made my blood pressure super low, so I felt crappy all the time. I don't remember if it helped with the nightmares, but that is why my pdoc gave it to me. So now they're back again. They're weird, too. Usually they're terrifying social situations that turn crazy and terrifying, and I jolt awake and sit up and am covered in sweat. I hate it. I avoid going to sleep because of it. Not like it matters, because I end up lying there awake if I try to fall asleep. It's 2:30 am right now. Early still. :-) I'm watching some stupid jail police show on tv, kinda. I have DID, and PTSD, so nighttime can be hard. So I understand what you're going through. If you don't have low blood pressure to start, prazosin might work for you. It's actually a beta blocker, usually for treating blood pressure. It's an old drug, so it's generic and cheap.

My husband is from England and always brags about the free health care, however, they do not like to order test and give diagnosis. Just a wait and see type care as I have seen it.

I do not understand the nightmares. I feel like I must be really messed up to even dream the awful things that I dream.
