Hey,
I don't even know how to start this, so I guess I'll start from the beginning. Ever since before I can remember I have been having HORRIBLE nightmares that an evil or dark presence is taking over my body and mind. In each dream I'm being chased or held down by something that I can't even see, I can just feel it. I feel it creeping into my body, then trying to engulf my mind. It's always when it tries to get into my mind that I somehow force myself to wake up. There have been times that I've died in my dreams because of this possession. It's very scary, and it's very real. I used to have dreams like this on a daily basis up until I was 29. Then it subsided to about twice a week. Now, it's about once or twice a month. These dreams began when my parents were still married. They divorced when I was 6 and I'm now 31. There have been more times than I can count where I wake up screaming at the top of my lungs and in cold sweats. I hate mostly those times where it's like you know you're dreaming, you are partly awake. You can't breathe well and you are completely paralyzed. You can't speak or open your eyes. All you can do it just lay there and hope that you can move soon, or you'll be doomed to live in the nightmare forever. It's the most terrifying experience. I had dreams again last night...all night. I woke every couple of hours with the same dream. I didn't sleep well. I now have zero motivation to do any work today. I want to cry. I just want it to go away. I'm afraid of my dreams.

Narcolepsy is known to bring about such feelings. Have you spoken to a neurologist and had a sleep study done? Might not be that, your mentioning of a form of sleep paralysis, leaves me feeling it's along the lines of a neurological medical condition.
Sounds frightening, either way. ![]() |

This happens to me regularly too. The evil darkness is always present in my dreams and I am always trying to escape from it. These dreams always leave me feeling exhausted and terrified. I wish they would stop. I feel for you, because I know what you're going through. I used to get regular night terrors too but haven't had one in a while now.

The dreams might be repressed memories of childhood abuse. Seeing a Therapist might help uncover this.

This dream sounds very scary. When you can wake yourself up when you're dreaming, it's called lucid dreaming. To me, this dream sounds like it's some fear that you have that is holding you down. This fear is so intense that that it paralyzes you. I'm not sure what could have triggered this dream if it happened before your parents divorce. It sounds to me that there's something going on that your conscious isn't aware of. With the dreams subsiding, it sounds like the fear has sort of tapered off, but it's still there. Try meditating on it to uncover the hidden reason for this dream, to uncover the hidden fear you have in your subconscious. Good luck ![]() |

Healingme4me: I'd never thought of Narcolepsy. I suppose I'm not on WebMD enough. Ha ha! I'm not ruling it out, now that you mention it, as I have a long family history of autoimmune disorders. Maybe it wouldn't be so scary if I just knew what it was and why.
Sabrina: I also feel for you! Yes, they do leave you SOOOO drained and tired. One site member mentioned Narcolepsy and I'm looking into it further. When I researched more about the disorder, I was astounded to see that I experience ALL of the major symptoms, which is why I'm going to get checked out. Thunder Bow: I understand that it could be due to those aspects. There were some pretty ugly aspects to my childhood, but there were also some good things. I'm actually in the process of looking into a therapist now for some other concerns I have. Thank you for the advice.
