I have had terrible nightmares since I was a kid. Recently, they've been getting worse and more frequent.....almost every night now. In them I get murdered by someone I love. There's a different dream for almost everyone I care about and in each one, they murder me in a different way. I usually wake up sweating, crying, or screaming......sometimes with pulled muscles and bruises from hitting stuff like the wall. Why on earth am I having these dreams and how can I make them stop? It's to the point now where I'm scared to go to sleep. When I start to drift off, I jolt awake with my heart racing.

I'm sorry you are having such distressing experiences. Here are links to 2 articles, from PsychCentral's archives, on the subject of how to eliminate recurring nightmares:

You mind may tying to recall repressed memories of childhood abuse. Seeing a Therapist? Anxiety may be triggering this.

I used to have bad nightmares but they went away when I started playing violent videogames like Fallout 3 and Fallout 4. The game provides solutions to the scary monsters. I was playing Fallout before bed for a few years and now I don't have nightmares anymore.

It's like I'm armed against the monsters in my dreams. Anything that is thrown at me, I can handle. I generally feel more confident now too.

The Department of Defense did a study and found that video games like Tetris helps soldiers with ptsd. Since my ptsd is non-combat I decided to try video games like Fallout to put faces on my existential stress. It's worked well.

If you're interested in Fallout games, I suggest Fallout 4 because it can go on forever. I've played over 2000 hours and I'm level 184.

Hope you find something that helps.

Thank you, I'll look into getting fallout 4. I actually just started playing through breath of the wild and the past couple of nights all I've dreamed about was beating its monsters.

Have you been to a doctor? My mom and older sister once informed me that I had a really bad night that it was so bad that all I could tell them is I need a doctor. They thought I was in some kind of pain. I was diagnosed with night terror but I have no memory of this ever happened. Perhaps the tv is on and it coming into your sleep if it is a horror movie. Have you thought about listening to soft music to help you relax?

My husband also has terrible nightmares where he flails around and hits things like walls and me lol. He is usually dreaming about the abuse he suffered as a child or about fighting with his brother who is trying to kill him. Apparently when I have nightmares I hold my breath unintentionally until i wake up. Something you might try though is a dream journal or a calming box for when you wake up. Writing down your dreams bring them out of your head and helps you think of them differently. A calming box will help with you calming down when you wake up frightened.
