I've been averaging like 3 hours of sleep a night for 7 months now (slept a lot more in April/March but I didn't sleep much over the winter either) I pretty much never feel tired, but I am, uh, "a little out of it" sometimes (like right now ) and sometimes say/do questionable things.

Would I feel more human if I slept a reasonable amount

i think you would. having enough sleep everyday resets our body and thats why you feel fresh the next day. it improves mental clarity, your productivity, health, among more other things. i do not personally recommend sleeping pills, but try meditating, or listen to some slow music. there are some apps that are build for sleeping, and there are stories of all the kinds with slow and dragged voices, that you can put on low volume and listen to. these apps really worked for me at one point in my life. may be you are not being able to sleep because your mind isnt at rest. and calming it is the best way to fall asleep.
hope this helps. good luck!

I do that, why do you think I get those avg. three hours?!?!

If I didn't I'd probably go three nights without sleeping, sleep two hours, go another three nights without sleeping.

If you say and do questionable things and sometimes feel out of it, you likely not fully alert and might lack mental clarity even though you feel fine. You also dont know of a long term effect of not getting enough sleep. Sleeping 3 hours a night for prolonged period of time isnt healthy.

Hey there Muddy.
Yeah the fact is, some people don't actually require/need all that much sleep than the so called average person. There are people who don't actually sleep at all and are functional, so I read. But obviously it's up to you to determine.

I know there are long term effects I just don't care about them/don't think I'll live to see them.

I feel horrible after 3 hours sleep or less, a bear with a sore head. And I'd like to bite that ''professional'' who tried to stop my benzos with a ''you can function on 3 hours sleep'' and ''warned'' me about something awful. I don't think I'll live as long as that, I sure hope not And she said it as if it was imminent. Or definite. What a jerk. I can read, surprisingly enough and have read the side effects and ''risks'' of benzos as well as seroquel (and other). It would actually be more likely to happen if I regularly have far too little sleep. Oh no another rant, sorry

I can't function on less than 5 hours. 4 is really pushing it. It depends on what I want to do the next day but I never drive if I didn't get enough sleep. Changing the clocks has really messed me up too.

IMO sleep is more complex than the so-called "experts" claim it to be. Oversimplified "tips" such as avoiding screens an hour before bed, going to bed at the same time each night, have a bed time routine, etc. etc. etc . is so trite and doesn't work for everybody---for whatever reason.

Mote is right, I think, that not everyone needs the traditional "8 hours" of sleep. It's the same with water. I don't drink 8 glasses a day but feel hydrated enough.

Sleep can be hard to get, and many factors come into play. Living in an apartment building with thin walls and stupid laminate flooring, as opposed to a house with the nearest neighbor 1/4 mile away, makes a difference.

If I can't sleep I found not knowing the time is better than knowing. It will just give me more to think about. Sometimes doing something to get out of my head such as reorganizing my socks helps. It's mundane and easy, and distracts me enough. I go for 15 minutes of such activity. Getting out of bed also helps, rather than tossing and turning.

Other times I just accept I'm awake and sometimes that helps. So many variables really, for me.

patbunny1 recommended a meditation app. You could also try one of the "channels" on mynoise.net: Background Noises • Ambient Sounds • Relaxing Music | myNoise ® . I use it for productivity; my favorite is "Calm Office" -- I don't use it for sleep or meditation, though. (I turn off my devices before I turn out the lights.)

For me, this is the time of year I like to sleep more. In fact, I long to try hibernating. But I've been getting only about 8 hours of sleep each night lately. I also have sleep apnea, and I sometimes awaken from the lack of air.

Maybe three hours is good enough for you. But on the days you feel off, you might not be waking at the end of a sleep cycle. If you're taking meds, mention the issue to the prescriber(s) if you haven't already. Perhaps there's one that should be taken in the morning rather than before bedtime.

Good luck!
