I would really like to help my mother quit smoking. As far as I know, she's been smoking since she was a teenager, and she is in my opinion a heavy smoker, having previously smoked about a package of cigarettes a day.
Although she says she wants to quit, whenever I see she's smoking a lot (like yesterday) and bring her attention to this, she dodges talking about her addiction and continues on with what she was previously doing or talking about. I have suggested she talk to my doctor about it or call the smoking hotline, but she dodges those too, and never provides a straight answer. What can I do to help motivate her? ![]() |

I can completely understand that you want to help your mother but unfortunately I believe that you can't force a person to change
![]() It seems you are doing all that you can - you can make sure that she knows the risks and knows where to seek help and that you will support her through that process but nicotine addiction is extremely strong. She will need the motivation herself to make the change. |

Buy her some electronic cigarettes. E- cigs are easier to quit than regular ones, and switching from regular to electonic is a breeze.

my mam found acupunture very helpful trying to quit
![]() you could casualy leave leaflets on how to quit and the damaging effects of smoking around the house or maybe you could both give up something together so that way she is not going cold turkey alone ![]() |

She's not going to quit until she makes up her own mind that she's ready. Don't nag. Nagging is the worst way to get a smoker to light up, I swear. It's been taking some serious determination, willpower & pain to get through the last week (I quit a week ago) but I've somehow made it this long. Anyway, reading & hearing others' successful & motivating stories has really encouraged me the most to keep me keepin' on.

calculate the costs. show her how much money she would be saving by quitting. is there something special she wants to do/or take a trip somewhere? honestly if you could get her to even cut down it would be helpful. good luck!
