Want to quit smoking?

Here's your place to hang out, offer and receive support, and just generally find ways to help you quit today.

Thanks DocJohn!

Nicotine is a powerful drug and I've found it very hard to stop relying on it for relaxation and for stimulation...
I had less trouble getting clean and sober than breaking this habit. After quitting for five years, I picked it up again

Thanks so much, DocJohn!!!!
I'm really looking forward to meeting others here on this forum, who are going through the same troubles I'm going through with quitting this nicodemon!

I quit for two years then relapsed for a year. Recently, I quit again for three months, and relapsed a few weeks ago. I am now on Chantix. I will NOT quit quitting until I beat this evil stick!

So, lets all get together, sharing our experience, strength and hope; supporting each other. Tell our stories to each other. Help each other through the bad times and cheer each other through the good times.

We CAN do this!

I'll be posting some information for us all shortly. Remember, our quit is one day at a time.

Peace!

you are way ahead of me!...I put one out then I'm already planning when/where I'll smoke another one.
gee, sounds just like I was when I was drinking!
anyone (*cough cough*) who stands outside smoking during a bad storm is an addict...not even the sirens going off made me head for cover.

Thanks for having this support thread. Support is the best help for quitting. Nothing like hearing from others that are going through the same thing. Quitting is very difficult as anyone who tries knows, we need all the support we can get. Thank you again.

I know of this, my roommate has used theese but he switched back to regular, anyway i have ben wanting to get my hands of these ever since he let me try

One thing is whenever i caught myself taking a smoke i ask myself: do i really need them, let me tell you it miinimized my smoking by 2/3. i am not as strong as my mother who just stopped smoking when she said that it was enough so im hoping if i get those electric smokes i get the puch i need to stop smoking the remaining 1/3 of my smokes

I have quit using Chantix and I have quit cold turkey but I always go back to smoking. Usually it happens when I feel discouraged or stressed or just when I decide to have a glass of wine. Then I think I'll just have one or two and stop again but it doesn't work that way.
I have begun to realize that I become depressed after having been quit for about a month or so and I do feel better for a little while when I light up...but then I find myself back on the downhill slide to a pack a day and all the bad symptoms..aches, pains, cough etc. that goes along with that.
I think that if I can possibly deal with the depression that I think is underlying the smoking addiction I may be able to quit for good.
Any comments?

I would suggest Chantix and the e-cig. the e-cig gives you the almost feeling of smoking because you do inhale and exhale smoke. Helps with the hand to mouth addiction.

Hi there...your post hits home with me. I too quit with Chantix back in January, then relapsed...thought I could have one cig just to prove to myself that I was in control and didn't need cigs anymore. Then I quit a series of times after this, each lasting 3 days, 5 days...the longest was 2 months using Chantix, for the second time! I can manage to quit for a few days and then buy a pack, finish the pack, quit again for a day or two, then buy another pack. Usually the third day, I get really tired and really down and the thoughts in my head cause so much tension in my body and drive to the store to get a pack. The relief is temporary but relief nonetheless. Everytime, I think... after this pack I will make an effort to quit again and this is the kind of vicious cycle I have been going through. Now I can't even get through 1 day without smoking. I have read everything there is about smoking, addiction, quitting etc. but I suspect depression is sabotaging my motivation and will to stop again and stay stopped. What are the symptoms of your depression?
Mine are just lethargy, overall feeling down, and unmotivated and uninterested in doing things. I also get bouts of anger and impatience which is not like me.

Hi DocJohn, thanks for the welcome. I posted on the 20th of Sept. and have not had a reply. I'm not sure how to use this forum. Seems complicated. Maybe I am doing something wrong. I posted in smoking cessation because trying to quit again is my main issue right now.

I was diagnosied with copd four years ago and it has been stable, now my lungs are declining. My doctor is telling me that six months from now i will not be able to do what I am doing now. I have been smoking a pack a day but am having trouble with trying to quit. I know it is killing me but I keep lighting up!

If you're on PsychCentral forums, though, I'm assuming you probably have some sort of mental disorder. Please be advised that many people with mental disorders -- myself included -- have VERY bad side effects with Chantix. Just a word of caution...

I do know of several people who have found the e-cig to be very helpful in quitting. My husband and I tried them, though, and found they irritated our throats too badly to continue using them.

Hello everybody congrats to the people who have quit and I know just how hard it is especially when you have an addictive personality .My mum was diagnoised with lung cancer 3 months ago so we both decided (doctors orders really) to gradually cut down and for the 1st 4 weeks it went ok ,used patches and the inhalers and had the 1 cigarette a day (bad idea) well the stress of the diagnoses for mum and my BPD has made us both go backwards ,now we smoke 8-10 a day which for mum is not good but I think im not ready dont feel I have the will power anymore :-(

Hello,

I am in the process of quitting cannabis and cigarettes so I can have a gum procedure to repair a receded gum. I have good teeth and this is the first work ever needed, the alt would be obvious and stand out I would loose my smile and I really don't want that, it will really make me feel ugly and horrible if I have to have that.

I am however having a really bad reaction to quitting, I have been having vivid scary dreams, I have been having scary thoughts, I have started grinding my teeth so bad I have damaged them, I'm awaiting a gum guard, my head aches and jaw hurts lots. I'm sweating and irritable, anxious and in so much discomfort. Unable to concentrate, sit still and my mind is racing. I have been trying to reach out for help but I am getting no where.

I called my pdoc to be seen sooner but no joy they have put me down for cancellations but that never comes through.

I called my GP and she said to stop the Nicorette patches and see if that makes a difference and to call her back if not. So that's not going to make quitting any easier.

I called NHS quit help line and they told me to start smoking again, that I should only quit one at a time.

So basically I'm stuck on my own with no other option, no help and no support. I'm beginning to loose my grip. Is quitting worth all this? I really don't want to go back this has been the most resolute I have been about quitting, I have enjoyed having the extra pennies, and liked not going through the panic of running out.

I only got 2hrs sleep last night coz I'm so scared of my dreams, I'm starting to feel like I'm loosing my mind :0(. I'm really sad and blue today.

I'm worried what harm I am going to do to myself if this continues, as i have a habit of taking ODs when I'm freaking out.

Any advice?

day 6 of quitting... don't feel awful physically, but psychologically it's a bear... a fierce battle is happening. Don't want to relapse at this point.
