There is a big wooden door, you can't see behind it except for the peep hole. You can hear it quack like a duck and you look through the peep hole and it sorta looks like a duck but it's too distorted to really tell...so is it safe to assume that there really is a duck behind the door and not a bunny in a duck costume?

Sounds like a hypothetical situation to me... I'm guessing?

It depends on how much you feel worried about the situation. Experiencing more anxiety or discomfort generally means you should be treating it as the "worst case scenario" over other times.

Otherwise, it's really up to you...

I like to try to presume that things are what I think they are and not have to think of alternatives... but that's just me.

I think it's safe to assume that their is something behind the door. Some people would say, if it talks like a duck and walks like a duck, then it's a duck, but you're never going to know what you're really looking at until you open that big wooden door and get rid of the distortions from the peep hole and take a look.

Maybe the duck, or rabbit in a duck costume, is just a diversion. Maybe it's just there to distract you from what's going on in left field!! You don't get a good view of left field, or right field for that matter, just looking through a peep whole. You need to open the door for that.

I say, it doesn't matter whether it is a duck or a bunny, you need to trust yourself enough to know that you can deal with whatever is behind that door when you open it. So grab a slice of bread and a carrot and open that door. If it's a ducky....you can feed it bread...if it's a bunny you can give it a carrot. Then after the introductions are aside, you can go from there.

I hope this makes sense!!

Not hypothetical, an analogy for what's going on with me right now concerning abuse...

I had a door. When I was ready to handle it, it opened and truth was revealed. There is wisdom inside about the timing of what will emerge and how. Stay safe, keep well ...

This is a door that is not ready to be opened yet then....

Take some time and get to know the door. Feel the door....knock on the door...get to know the boundary and why it is there. The door will not open until you're ready to meet who or what ever is on the other side. To force it open now could be re-traumatizing.

Come to terms with the door itself first, and once you understand that, then you can start to move through it.

Take your time!!! (if okay)

You guys are right. It's too bad patience when it concerns things like this is definitely not one of my virtues.
