I got my teeth,,dentures, I don't think I am going to be able to keep them in. I can't stand to have anything hard in my mouth to stay, it makes me gag and it triggers my sexual abuse. What can I do?

I so understand what you mean about the gagging feeling. Your dentures need to be adjusted. Mine at first felt soooo big and it was frustrating because I wanted them to be comfortable now, actually yesterday would have been best. So many times I wanted to give up but ppl kept telling me it would get better. Many adjustments, tears and angry moments and we finally have them where they are tolerable to wear. I did some adjusting with sand paper when they just weren't getting it. I did it with 3 grits of sand papers. They would always polish it up when I would go back cuz I didn't have the equipment to put the smooth finish on it. Maybe that wasn't wise but I helped get them fit quicker after all I'm the one wearing them and was easier for me to know what I was talking about.
It was a tough adjustment for me but with adjustments they can be made tolerable. When I had them shorten them where it didn't feel like I was going to gag on them it helped cuz I didn't know how I would have been able to of lived with that either.
I know some ppl say theirs fit so well that they can't even tell they have them in. I don't think I'd ever get to that point but it is tolerable now. Oh the lining they put in them too makes them a little softer but they don't put that in till they get them fitted pretty well.
It really does get better. It was a long process for me but hopefully you may be one of the lucky ones that they can get them fit to your comfort quickly.
I had to resign to the fact it will never be to the comfort level that I've heard others talk of but it is ok. It has been over a year now I've had mine. Ready for another adjustment for my gums have shrunk even more. (rolls eyes). My mouth has things wrong with it that it makes it difficult to fit but I am satisfied with tolerable and as long as I don't feel like I'm being gagged that's cool. Hang in there. Tomorrow I'm leaving and I'll be gone for a week or so and away from computer but you can pm me and when I get back we can talk if you like.

Congrats on your new dentures! I know, you don't feel like celebrating them right now. What you are going through with the gagging is so very normal. Your tongue has to get used to this awkward plastic thing in your mouth...it's not an easy road, I'm sorry to say.

I have a very huge gag response...it took me weeks to get used to having mine in. All I could do was wear them for as long as possible each day then take them out again. Every couple of days I found I was able to wear them a little bit longer. Within a couple of months, and after many alignments, I was finally able to wear them all day until I went to bed.

As far as your triggering goes, I have no words of wisdom for you. I'm sorry it's doing that and I pray that it stops real soon for you.

Take good care and best of luck getting used to the new teeth!

im afraid i will have to get dentures before im very old because of the damage to my teeth from my ED. when i had braces when i was younger with a big plastic plate like a denture plate i had such horrific nightmares though i am really scared. i used to dream i was biting off someones thumb in my mouth. it was so vivid as if it was actually happening. maybe its related to abuse of some sort? who knows. lol.
im sorry you have to deal with this. it must be very difficult to get used to. i hope you can adjust quickly. maybe i will come to you in a few years asking how you did it and you will have a great success story to tell me. My new teeth! i hope so for you!
take care

One other thing I forgot to mention in my previous post was this.... when you find yourself starting to gag, the best thing to do is to slowly breath in through your nose....and out your mouth....it really does help to stop the gag reflex.

Good luck to you LILITH!!

Hello Biiv, It is one of the hardest things I have had done in a really long time. the awful memories... I hope you don't have to get them. But if you need them there are not a lot of other choices.
Thanks for writing!

Hello Mlyn,
I hope I get use to mine soon.... I hate things in my mouth. They feel so weird..... My T thought I might have flashbacks about abuse with them. She was right. Thanks for writing! Hope we stay in touch,
Lilith
