I am 55 and still get a monthly period. Yuck!

About a week before my periodI get severely depressed and start to hear voices, have visualizations, feel things that are not real and have a constant urge to do something bad to me.

I was in the hospital a month ago and then again two weeks ago. I take 200 Geodon among many other pills

I have told my old nurse practicioner and hospital psychiatrist's; they all claim there is no correlation. Tomorrow I have an appointment with a new psychiatrist I hope she has some answers!

There has to be some.

Anyone else suffer from this and what has worked for you?

Andrea

While it may be possible that you have an underlining mental health issue that is being aggravated during your period due to hormonal changes I would still have a talk with your GYN concerning possible PMDD.

I have PMDD and it is as you described and before I went on Celexa for PMDD I use to become suicidal one week out of every month, usually three days before my period and lasting three days into my period (give or take a day).

Sarafem is also good for PMDD / PMS

Hi Rahpsody,
PMDD does sound a lot like my symptoms only I can get it up to two weeks before the period and it lasts a few days of my period.

Last two hospital stays my insurance declined payment. I don't know what too do. I'm afraid not to go in. Even when I'm not expecting my period I get afraid of me. The total very fast drop into suicidal depression happens so quickly that I have trouble controlling it.

I met with my new psychiatrist this morning. I like her and she listened. Upped some meds but didn't want to deal with the mood swings for another month. She wants to see if there is improvement with the new increases.

I feel positive about this doctor.

Hello Rhapsody,
Thanks for your post.

I was released earlier this evening from a 3 night hospital stay. Not going into detail but my thoughts were very violent. My period is due on 3rd of December.

The psychicatrist stopped prescribing all anti depressants for me, I took three different ones. He claimed that some bipolar women get more agitated when hormonal and anti depressants can cause some women (like me) with rage or anger during hormonal changes become more so. I will most definitely move on to PMDD

Again, thanks for the reply,
Andrea
