Why is it so scary??? I have been 3 times before but I always get so sick about it. Its 2 weeks away and I think about it all the time! I know I need to go but it is SO hard for me to deal with it and just go. I hate being exposed and people seeing me. Why?

Some docs more than others make us uncomfortable. It isn't so natural to be at the OB/GYN, espcially if you only have to go once in awhile. It helps me to know that my doc and most OB/GYNs that I have been to over the years really care about women and their patients, and want to help. It is awkward on one hand for them too do the exam too b/c they know it is not the usual thing for you to be going through and they understand that.

Sometimes I take along music and/or a book to the doc appointments, that make me the most nervous, helps and soothes me while I'm there. A little dab of lavender oil on my temples or chest too can help for calming. Talking to them a little bit longer or while going through the exam helps as well, doesn't have to be about the gyn stuff, anything to take your mind off it. I've even been known to find a funny pair of socks to wear to catch them off guard, to make us both laugh. Perhaps some of these things will help. Best wishes.

It's certainly nothing one has happy butterflies about. Only dentist ranks worse for me.
If you haven't, make sure you get a gyno you are comfortable with. I have one who is very sensitive and gentle and basically babbles about everything else during the appointment. I don't feel so 'looked at'. The moment she enters the door, she starts talking, only to pause a little when she warns what she's going to do and to ask if I am Ok. That helps not feeling so exposed and gives me a chance to say if something is too much.
I can't believe too many people actually enjoy going, so you are not alone. Try not to think about it even though it's hard. It's one of the things where thinking and preparing won't make it any better.

I was 18 when I had my 1st exam and I was very shy then and I hated every second of the examination. It wasn't any fault of the doctor - it was all in my perception. As time went on I became better. What helped me greatly was having my family doctor who's female do the screening because I don't have any gynecological problems.

After having 2 kids, I'm now fine with getting this done. I just look at it as a necessary procedure to make sure I'm healthy. I also think the doctors probably get tired of invading peoples privates or it becomes so routine for them, that it doesn't phase them at all. My husbands aunt died from metastisized cervical cancer because she wasn't comfortable getting an exam. I would rather go through this than become ill from something preventable. It's just another part of the body to the doctors - just a medical procedure.

So it gets better - I went from hating it and feeling a nervouse wreck to carrying on a normal conversation during the test. Men have to have **** exams after 40 and I suppose they're not happy about this either. Imagine if this was your occupation - day after day you have to do this? I hope all goes well for you.

Well, at least you are all going, I hate to tell you that I don't do well at all with it, has to do with abuse in me.

I really try hard to dissassociate with it but my body really shivers and the last time I went I chickened out.

I do try to think of it as just a check up. But when I get into that chair and well, lets just say, I dont do well with that.

I used to hate that above ALL ELSE myself. That was the most embarrassing thing I could think of. It was undignified! LOL

When I was about 42, I had to have a complete hysterectomy - they took EVERYTHING -- so now I don't have to go thru that except about every 5 years or so. But I detest it !!

If they could find some other way of doing things like that, where you weren't in such an undignified position -- maybe it wouldn't be so bad. But the way things are now, we women will HATE that procedure til hell freezes over.

Oh thank heavens! The visit wasnt bad at all! The waiting was worse than the actual exam. It was the first time I went to this office that a friend suggested to me. She was so nice and it wasnt really awkward at all. She did ask my irregularities though and did blood work and gave me birth control to fix it up. Whew! I dont have to go back in a year!

Hey Hallie I'm glad that your exam wasn't as bad as you thought it would be. Good to see you how have you been?

I am pretty well. My daughter just graduated from college, my twins will graduate from HS in a couple of weeks; the youngest leaves for boot camp in a couple of months. Lots of changes coming at me fast and not giving me any time to adjust.

Did you have that nasty flu that was going around?

no.....when im anxious and worried about something (TMI maybe) i have loose stools and sometimes diarreah. its really embarassing. its been happening for about a year now. Ive always had issues with anxiety (i taje risperdal for it) but when its something like this even though I know Im ok and will be ok...I cant help it. I got sick 3 times this morning before going. Yesterday I thought about it momentarily during Sunday School and had to go to the bathroon where I got sick.

Hey, Hallie! Congrats on making it through your exam! Also, having digestive/intestinal problems is common when we are worried about something. I've been there and done that!

I am so glad to hear you went to a woman. My first exam was done by a woman--at my insistence. Since I have been married, I have been to some men for gyno stuff, and both my babies were delivered by men. But the last few years I have decided that I will try to always go to women for gyno check-ups. After all, they have the parts, too. And I have found that they are less clumsy with the procedure. I suggest to any woman who is really bothered by this process that she find a woman doctor.

HALLIEBETH, I feel that way too. Yikes!
The discomfort of being exposed and people seeing you is understandable since a woman's privates are such a very intimate part of yourself. Nothing wrong with feeling that way unless it prevents you from getting the care that you need. Then, that would be a problem.
