I went to the OBGYN yesterday to get brith control pills and the dr was on his way out the door, so he kind of just threw stuff at me. He gave Generess FE, which is a low dose birth control. I was reading about it online, and 2 of my psych meds lower the effectiveness, tegretol and provigil. I'm not givin up my meds to be on BC. I guess I'll test out the BC and see how it works. I'll let you know in a month if I'm pregnant.

Any one else on BC and take these meds? How is it going for you?

I really hope this stuff doesn't effect my moods.

My dr's nurse called and told me not to start taking the BC because of the tegretol. My dr didn't realize that I took it b/c he was in a hurry. I'm going back on the 7th to talk about other options. She said something about nuvaring, but that has the same warnings, so idk what they can give me.

is an IUD an option? Nuvaring, apart from being hormonal, may increase the chance of infections.

It can be a pain to find something that works. The higher the hormones, the higher the chance that it will affect mood. If you get migraines with aura, be careful of bc pill because the risk of stroke is increased greatly if you have that combo.

Good luck!
Thanks for this!

I take Generess and it's overall a good pill. Provigil definitely effects bc pills-so do antibiotics FYI.. Don't chance it. And don't get an iud or any insertable device if you have multiple partners. It's high risk for infection and pelvic inflammatory disease.

Just an update, I went to the OBGYN and I'm going on depo provera. My dr drew me a nice illustration about how tegretol effects everything and how it makes my liver go into overdrive. He said he has other patients on tegretol and what he usually does is give them 50 mcg pills, since the tegretol decreases the effectiveness, but there's a higher risk of blood clots and stroke, and since I smoke, he didn't want me on it. The other option was Nuvaring, but I'm not to keen on that. The basic solution is to get the meds into the blood stream and bypass the liver. That's why I'm going to try Depo. I just really hope I don't go crazy. :P

you might consider this. I got implanon. It's an implant in your arm that is effective for three years. It is not affected by antibiotics or any medications. It is not an "abortive" method (although it does thin the lining) it's actual job is to prevent ovulation. The major complaint most woman have is excessive bleeding or irregular periods. I've had mine for over 2 1/2 years. After the first 6 or so months the bleeding got much better and even though it's sometimes irregular, it's really not anything to get me off of it. It is not an IUD.

Why not keen on Nuvaring? Afraid of the increased risk of infections?

I just don't want to use it, cause I don't like sticking things up there. :P Seems like it would be unpleasant and I'd rather not try it out. So I'm going with the Depo. Simple shot and lasts for 3 months. Plus I've used it in the past.
