Thanks Doc, for this.

Well ladies, what should we discuss? =)

Hmmmm, how about, who are your female roll models?

I've been getting a lot of help from the Tyra Banks show. I love her because she's a beautiful woman, but she's not afraid to show her quirks and silliness. The topics of her shows range from relationship help to body image help to addictions to beaty. She may not be everyone's image of a roll model, but she's done wonders for me. Who is yours?

My T is my best female role model, by far. I can't think of any celebrities that I would call role models. I would need to know them personally to be able to give them that title.

My T shows excellent balance in her life. She can laugh off the little stuff, and conserve her energy for the things that matter. She's made me realize how important that is. I am a much more laid-back and relaxed person thanks to her. She is one of the few people I know who is completely unattached to dogmas, and yet manages not to judge those who choose to let dogmas be their guide. She is compassionate, always.

On a side note, she is in her late 40's and has amazing fashion sense. Fashion has NEVER been my strong suit. I said to my husband one evening that when I'm our T's age, I would love to be as cool as she is. He joked "then why don't you start now?" (he really was kidding - and I snorted wine out my nose when he said it!)

woohoo new forum! Sweet!!

My Housemaster (House Mom) is most definitely my role model. I don't see her anymore, but i think of her and how she has impacted me daily. Also, my old T .... she is everything i would ever want to be, plus more.

My Mom! She has made many mistakes yet she has become one of the strongest people I know. And she has never, ever given up on me.

This might be a bit tacky but I really admire Helen Clarke. Not for her looks, of course, but for all the rest of it:

Well, I guess I should pick a roll model who's not a celebrity.

My old choir director. She was the director for a girls chorus, and she helped sing beautifully, but she also taught us how to be good, strong, couragious women.

There's plenty of other women in real life who are roll models, but I have to give credit still to Tyra, for a lot of my strength as far as confidence goes. No matter how hard anyone tried, no one could convince me to be confident in myself until I started watching Tyra.

I haven't really thought about female role models... I always wanted to be like my dad and was avoiding at all cost to be like my older sister....

Funny how fast we women got chatting here... it just caught my eye... the number of posts here and then 'there'....

I love this... this is a great idea... Thanks Doc!

Can't say as I have one particular role model. In another lifetime, I wanted to be like a friend I had. She was... or tried to be like a Southern Lady. Then I started noticing the fakeness behind it all and said "Nope! Not her!"

I suppose I consider Oprah a good role model but something's happened to her. She doesn't seem "real" to me anymore. I still admire her for what she's done with her life especially considering where she came from and the obstacles she's overcome. I wouldn't want to be her now, though!

Maya Angelou is another great lady. I've always loved Barbara Bush, Audrey Hepburn, Katherin Hepburn, I think I'm a bit "crusty" like KH, but as far as trying to be like them... no. For a long time now, I've been learning who *I* am and working on becoming that person.

I thought about this, and the first woman who comes to mind is Tracy Chapman. Shes strong, and sings lyrics I can really get in touch with. I also like that she seems grounded.

I love Tracy Chapman!!!!!!!

Here's another example of why Tyra has helped me so much. I'm watching her show right now and it's all about haviing curves is beautiful.....for some reason, when she says it, I can believe it.

Why is that only Tyra Banks can get a message to me the curves are sexy????

I have a friend in RL who is the epitome of 'curves are sexy'. She probably weighs about 200lbs, but the way she carries herself exudes sexy.

I also posted in ED about my recent experience at a hot springs resort. It was very interesting to see women of all sizes and observe what made a woman 'sexy' or not. I came away with reinforcement that it has much, much less to do with physical size, but everything to do with how a woman carries herself, how open she appears to be, how easily she smiles...

Yeah exactly. That's what I've been really working on, my confidence, from watching that talk show lol! I'm 180lbs. At my heaviest I was 225. I had gotten down to 150 but the weight came pouring on after my dx. So I'm just trying to get happy with the curves! BF doesn't seem to have a problem with it!

Hmmmm, real life in the flesh role models? That's a toughie for me because I set standards up so high, then always seem to get disappointed by ppl. So, yeah oddly enough, celebs came to mind first. My mother, sad to say, is not a role model at all and I feel that it has been unfortunate for me in that I am always striving to find one in my life....
Guess, I'd have to say, Tori Amos. She's struggled much in the same way as me and has managed to create a platform to tell the women of the world to stay strong and it's okay to fall pretty far as long as you keep striving to get up and make changes. She's come a long way and she really moves me emotionally.
So, for today, my t is starting to fit the bill, but there again, I put her up high and that just sets her up to fall....

id have to say my mother is one of my role models. shes gets confused and lost and doesnt always trust herself and makes a lot of mistakes but every single time she gets up and keeps going. she apologises in a flash when shes wrong, everything she does is motivated by love and kindness and she has touched the lives of so many people. she has her major downsides but to me shes perfection in her flaws.
also id have to say melissa etheridge. shes over come so much and watching her develop and being touched by every lyric ive heard of hers has been an inspiring experience. its fantastic to see her apparently happy now and sharing that and her strength and hope and support with the world.
mary robinson is another role model. shes the former first female president or ireland and the former un high commissioner for human rights. despite how difficult she found holding both of those positions because of her gender and her drive to uphold human rights and make the world a genuinely better and more peaceful place, especially for the unlucky people in life she continued and continues to do what she can and stands out like a beacon for me as to where you can get to if you accept the limitations that are everywhere in life and then push them diplomatically as far as they can go. she balances her power and her need to help very well as far as i can see and seems to care nothing for her own popularity.
and finally, an online friend of mine who has been through hell on earth and back and yet still moves steadily forward gaining balance visibly as she goes on. i want to be as strong, determined and positive as her. ive only ever seen one photo of her but to me her personality makes her one of the most beautiful people in my life.
ok im done. Sweet!!

I had role models as I was growing up, but have since realized that they were so stereotypical, and sometimes unfavorable, that I didn't think about them to list here first...

...there were many women who helped me, teachers, and Girl Scout leaders mainly.

This forum is a good idea.

The only female role model we ever had was our swimming coach who died in a car accident when we were about 12. She stopped our parents from holding us down every night & pouring in barbituates. She was Dutch, & she fought for the resistance during WW2.
