Hello there,
Tomorrow I am getting a paragard IUD placed. I've been waiting for the chance to do this for quite a few months now, but now I'm getting a little nervous. The procedure is not what bothers me, I have researched and I know the procedure is under five minutes and I have read many articles stating that there's a painful pressure feeling and it generally feels foreign. I am not worried whatsoever about any of that, I believe I have a high pain tolerance. Anyway, it sounds silly, but what I am nervous about is the after-procedure. In the articles, I read that upon sitting up the majority of patients felt dizzy, faint or sick. Everything considered, I'm excited to finally have the birth control that I initially wanted. Has anybody here had an IUD placed, skyla, mirena or paragard? And how was your experience? |

Way back in the 80s when I had one put in, I remember having cramps afterwards but nothing else really. There may have been some spotting but that soon cleared up. It worked out well for me, but I never really wanted kids.

I had Paragard placed at 6 weeks postpartum after the last baby.
I do not remember anything unpleasant at all in connection with the insertion or immediately after. I remember that it was done at Planned Parenthood and that a nurse practitioner did it - not a dr and not a midwife. But I have no recollection of the insertion itself and what followed it. Probably because I had so much stress in my life at that time that such little things did not even register in my mind. Eventually, I went off Paragard due to heavy periods and some cramping. I have been on Mirena since 2004-ish and prefer Mirena to Paragard. However, this is not to say that Paragard was bad; it was good enough. Mirena is simply better. |

I had an IUD put in about five years ago. The insertion was quite painful, and I had fairly bad cramping for a few days afterward. Then really heavy periods for four years. I don't remember feeling sick or faint after the procedure.

I'm on my second Mirena IUD. For several months after having the first one, I had mild cramping and a little spotting all the time. That did go away. I had only a few hours of cramps after the second one was inserted. Before getting the Mirena, I had PMDD. Now it's all gone!
