Hi, I'm in major perimenopause (I'm 52). My periods, which were always very normal and regular, have been coming every 2-3 weeks for the past few months. They're also very, very heavy. I asked my gyn for advice and she's putting me on a low-dose birth control pill. I'm bipolar, having an awful time with SEVERE anxiety (I'm wondering if the extreme anxiety is related to perimenopause). I'm wondering if anyone here has tried the low-dose pills and, if so, how was it? Thank you

PoppyRoad, I haven't been on birth control pills for decades and I am post menopause. I do remember all the symptoms of peri-menopause and I do remember anxiety being a big part of peri-menopause. I hated the sweating and hot flashes, too. My depression was worse as well. I hope someone can give you more information about taking the birth control pills. Best wishes.

Hi PoppyRoad,
I'm on Minastrin 24 Fe. I am sensitive to birth control pills and I had issues with depression on them. Off them, I had heavy periods that would go on well over a week. I finally told my gyn exactly what I wanted out of a pill and she suggested the Minastrin because it's pretty low dose and it's been wonderful…I don't feel emotionally altered or hormonal in any way and my periods went from 10 days to just one spotty day! It's also monophasic so you can take packs back-to-back and skip your period entirely. I don't know what I would do without it. As a caveat I'm in my 20s so I can't vouch for how it works for perimenopause bleeding but it's really worked wonders for my regular heavy bleeding. Unfortunately sometimes you don't really know until you try. |

My gyn put me on it for perimenopausal symptoms as well. It's only been about 6 weeks so too soon to tell. I do feel that my extreme irritation, which is my worst symptom, is improved. Low dose pills seems to be standard treatment for perimenopausal tx.
