I've been on antibiotics for the last nine days. I am afraid I might have an infection now but not yeast infection as I do not present those symptoms. I am having itching, discharge and an ammonia like odor. It's really embarrassing and I even didn't want to post here. I'm supposed to see my gynecologist January 20 for my annual. Should I try to get in sooner?

I would, just to be on the safe side. You might need a different antibiotic. I think it is best to let a doctor decide.

The last time I took an antibiotic, Mylan-Clindamycin, it made me feel awful. Gastrointestinal upset & pain. The doctor had to take me off of it. Took over a month and a half for my bowels to recover.

One of the downsides of antibiotics is that they destroy all bacteria/microbes in your body - not just the bad ones you're trying to get rid of, but the good ones, too. Antibiotics are indiscriminate that way. What you've been prescribed probably compromised your gut flora that will leave one susceptible to all kinds of health issues. The more progressive doctors out there (and there aren't a lot of them) recommend taking a good deal of probiotics while on medication. Just eating yogurt with active cultures probably won't do much for you at this point. If you have the finances to do so, go to drugstore and by several types of probiotics to give your system a much needed boost. Acidophilous (sp.?) is a primary one, but your system needs the support of many. Also, reducing sugar intake at this point is very important.

There is a LOT of information about the interaction of antibiotics' on the body and the importance of probiotics out there on the internet you could read up on.

Hope you are feeling healthy very soon!

P.S. Apologize for any typos - I am the *worst* smartphone typist ever!

Antibiotics can throw off your system. Probiotics can help you become more balanced. You can take them orally and insert them vaginally. It helps my system stay normal.

Im not sexually active but I had these same symptoms when I had bacterial vaginosis once.

I'll look at those things tomorrow. Ty! The urgent care dr was rude and also said nothing about it.

Unfortunately, you don't need to be sexually active to have vaginal health issues like yeast infections and such. Sorry the urgent care dr. was a jerk.

HALLIEBETH87, Were you able to see the doctor who prescribed the antibiotics? When I had my prescription filled the pharmacist recommended I take probiotics and stressed that it needed to be a minimum of 50 billion live cultures in order to be effective. I got some from the health food store that contained Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus strains. Hope you feel better soon.

Is this after taking Diflucan?

Possible Side Effects:

If you develop skin eruptions, experience a new rash or allergy symptoms such as hives, contact a doctor or pharmacist.
Thanks for this!

Do not take probiotics the same time you take your antibiotic. Take them as far apart as possible.
Thanks for this!

You poor thing! Not sure if you need to give Diflucan more time, but it is very common for it not to work. As for an explanation as to why, I am unable to post the url, but go to google and search " dr jen gunter when Diflucan fails" - it should point you to a 8-11-15 article. If you are open to considering more natural remedies, I strongly encourage you to visit earthclinic dot com. If not, that's perfectly ok. OTC Benadryl can help provide some itch relief, but cannot cure anything and can make you *really* drowsy. I'm not a doctor so my only "advice" is to read up on the issue. Just know that women all over the world go through exactly this and struggle to find the right treatment for them. It's year 2016 and you would think that people wouldn't have to go through all this - sorry that you are. Please keep us posted!
Thanks for this!

Well I've taken that second dose and I'm eating yogurt too.

If it's not gone after a week of treatment (Monday) should I call dr?

My limited experience with Diflucan involved 1 prescription, 2 pills only and it worked very quickly. Your doc may have a different protocol. But that is the beauty of Diflucan - if it's going to work, it's going to work in 1 or 2 doses. If I were you, I would be on the phone 1st thing in the morning getting another appt , hopefully by the end of the day. Especially if you are not seeing any relief by the time you wake up (and not masked by any antihistamines you might be taking to cope with the itch.) Be pushy if you have to (not rude, but assertive.) I would insist on a a culture, too. But, that's just me. That said, maybe the Rx will really kick in by morning.
Thanks for this!

My doctor gives me 2 pills of diflucan for 5 days. He said that yeast infections are getting harder and harder to treat. Hope you are feeling better soon.
