The right side of my jaw line has reoccuring acne that like to pop up when im stressed or when my hormones are off.
Its the weirdest thing, for example i had a stressful thing happen to me on tuesday and an hour later the right side of my face was covered in acne cysts.
This also happens once a week every month the week before my period.

I havent had any acne up until last year (24 years old) and now this is happening.

Anyone else out there having hormone related acne?

I have in the past, and tbh it was something that settled with time although I did have a course of tetracycline which helped.

If it's related to your cycle maybe consider if the pill would help, or if you are already on maybe a different type.

I would check with your dr as there are things that can be done to help.

I tried tetracycline and it did nothing.
Im worried the pill may interfere with my bipolar, from my understanding the pill has hormones in it.
Im really uneducated in this topic and my dermatologist says ask pdoc, and pdoc says ask dermatologist. I think they are both afraid to presribe something that will affect the bipolar.

Anyone just get breakouts from stress?

It was definitely linked to stress with me.

Sucks that pdoc & derm are passing the buck and I can see why you are concerned about the pill and your bipolar.

Have you looked into natural remedies? There are some which claim to balance hormones such as Red Clover.

I definitely get stress break outs, always have.

I never had normal teenaged acne, only the stress related kind and lithium induced as an adult (theeee worst!)...

The stress zits are easy enough for me to get rid of though. I just apply a rooibos facial mask, and or steam my face, depending on how bad it is and how fast I want it to disappear.

it would be more useful to ask a pharmacist about drug/drug reactions, they know a LOT about meds..its kind of their job.
I too am having cystic break outs, my dr didn't want to refer me to dermatology yet, we did just have a weather change...I am post menopausal but it doesn't matter, my mom is in her 70s and can still get acne on occasion. neither of us take hormone replacement as she is a breast cancer survivor and that makes me at risk as well.
Thanks for this!

Ugg. I hate adult acne. I have the occasional breakout myself, and because of that don't often wear makeup. When I do, I use oil free Neutrogena products. They not only are oil free and keep you from breaking out, but they are helpful in healing what blemished you already have. I use their mineral powder foundation too, so that I won't have liquid makeup all in my pores, just in case.

As for natural remedies, I've heard that you can put a sliver of garlic on a pimple and it'll help. Garlic has healing properties and helps boost your immune system. I've also seen many a video on home made mask peels made out of Elmer's Glue (the liquid kind) and charcoal to help with clogged pores. Helps to get rid of blackheads, whiteheads, and everything else inside your pores. Don't know where one would get charcoal powder for that though.

I also once received a suggestion to use grapeseed oil extract to get rid of acne. They come in gel capsules and are essentially vitamins you take. I tried that for a while and it seemed to help a little.

Anyways, I just wanted to let you know that I feel your struggle and hope you find a solution to your problem.

There is an acne cream that works very well. It is OTC and is called Persagel. Small white tube.

I don't know if this would apply to you but I work in an office and always on the phone and if I use the receiver instead of my headset I break out with very deep and painful acne that takes forever to resolve. Something about the pressure of the receiver against my skin. So if you are on the phone a lot that might be aggravating it?

@The O.P, I've dealt with acne for most of my life until I was in my 30's. If it's that bad, maybe you can get on accutane? A dermatologist can give you a cortisone shot for large zits. The zit or zits then just become a red spot on your face in a few hours or the next day.

Also, do you drink water? If not, start doing that. It helps flush out the toxins in your body. Certain foods can cause breakouts such as sugar, junk food, fried foods, alcohol, excessive caffeine consumption, and anything that has a lot of preservatives in it.

The healthier your diet is, the better your skin will be.

The makeup or products that you use on your face can cause breakouts too. Avoid using anything with oil in it And avoid harsh chemical. Use natural cleansers, scrubs, and toners instead if you don't already do so.

Once I started using more natural and cruelty free products, my skin got a lot better. One of the best toners to use after removing your makeup is the Body Shops tea tree oil toner. It gets rid of the makeup that is left behind, but it's not good for the eyes.

I use NYX eye makup remover, and it's inexpensive and it works well. It's also cruelty free and OK for sensitive eyes. You can also use coconut oil just for eye makeup.

Tea tree oil is an antispectic, so that is an acceptable oil to use. I use makeup remover wipes from Alba or say yes to cucumbers. Both brands can be bought at Ulta, Sprouts, and most drug stores.

I use a natural Shea Moisture black African scrub on my face almost daily to get rid of the dead skin cells. You can find that at Walgreens. It's natural and good for troubled skin. As for makeup, don't use to much heavy makeup or cheap drug store stuff. It's worth it to pay a little more for quality makeup.

If you're on a budget though, e.l.f and NYX are good brands that are cruelty free and I've never broke out from using their makeup. I use It makeup C.C cream which also has a 50 spf in it as well as Urban Decays loose powder and It brand pressed powder with 50 spf in it. You can find those items at Ulta or ulta.com.

Every morning wash your face with a gentle cleanser or the tea tree toner to get rid of the dirt and oil before putting on makeup if you use any. Also, use an oil free primer to make you makeup last and to keep the makeup from blocking your pores.

Never go to bed with makeup on. Always take it all off as soon as you can. And change your pillow cases often. Put your hair up in a ponytail or bun when you sleep if you have long hair. Tea tree oil can help make most small zits disappear fast. The Body Shops tea tree oil is the only one that doesn't sting, so get that.

If you can find a good esthetician (sp)? Then go to one on a consistent basis. Since I have been getting my skin professionally cleaned and all of my blackheads and whiteheads and what few pimples I do get every now and then twice a month, my skin has been clear most of the time except for when I'm on my period usually.

Try to avoid stress, smoking if you do, then cut back, and get at least 8 hours of sleep a night. If you do all this, your skin will look better in a few days or a week probably.

Wow! Great tips! I am all for natural remedies to avoid adding meds to my long list i already have and you gave me a TON of options!
Thanks so much! Im going to start with the tea tree oil.
I do drink coffee and smoke and my diet is terrible, but im working on those. I never really grasp how much sugar really theows things off balance in a lot of ways. I gotta get better at that.

Thanks again!

hugs to you. i've had acne since i was a teenager. I used to fight it diligently with creams, tonics, dermatologists and such.
i don't really try anymore. i mean i wash my face and use moisturizer, but other than that I just wear some concealer and powder to try to hide it.
funny cause i always thought makeup would make it flare up but it really hasn't changed at all. but i feel better covering it.

Guys. I am feeling so depressed right now accompanied with suicidal thoughts but when I discuss my problem with my parents they never do regard it as important. Thats teenage acne. Mine is not at all severe but actually quite mild. However I do get a very bad pimple around my nose and now I ot one under my nose. It has healed but left a weird bump idk what it is and if it will take alot of time to heal.i have quite alot of events coming up. I am SO done with it. WHY can't I be normal like enjoying life not caring about anything and all I can think is people staring at that bump and it ruining my appearance. I am so depressed , soaking wet from hours of crying. I feel helpless.

If it makes u feel any better...

The teen years are the years of the ultra ego... Everyone is so wrapped up worrying about their own zit, scar, uni-brow or black heads, that they really don't notice yours....

You THINK they do, because your ego tells you so, but in reality nobody really gives a shyt. They're too busy being worried about the same things you are.

Find some nice cover up for occasions when you really don't want to be seen or photographed with bumps, but in the mean while, take some advice from this thread and try and apply it to see if your skin will respond positively.

I wish I knew about the teenaged ego when I was one, I would've enjoyed those years so much more.

I am a fan of using witch hazel as a skin toner. It is super cheap and sold next to rubbing alcohol and peroxide. Using some kind of exfoliating tool like an abrasive puff or face brush helps remove dead skin.

Do you prop your head up with your hand? You could be transferring dirt and oil from your hand to your face. Just a thought. Good luck!

I have had adult acne, I'm now 28 but it drove me insane. Every time I knew I'd be going to a party, etc. the first thing I'd think is 'is my skin going to look bad?'. I saw a few doctors, and I finally found one who knew what he was doing, I even had bacne, one of the first things he asked was if it was on my back too. Well he put me on birth control, because acne around the jawline is quite often the cause of hormones. And I'm NOT kidding when I say it has completely solved my problem.

Adult acne! Ugh!

It wasn't overnight, but I have not looked back. I can't even believe it was that bad. So if you are able to give it a go I would say go for it, I've personally found no issues with it emotionally. In fact because I skip the sugar pills I find I no longer get the hormonal emotional roller coaster I used to (not just a bit down, but suicidally depressed every month on cue). The only thing I've had with it is the boobage region is quite sore, say if someone tries to hug me, haha. But I'm happy with it if that's the worst that is happening. Hopefully it could be the same for you (no negative emotional effects I mean, not chest pain, haha).

I have Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome and as a result I have high testosterone which causes acne. Yeah, it's annoying.

That's a really good point, also good idea for anyone with acne is to keep your pillow cases REALLY clean, hot wash, change every few days - they can transfer oil & bacteria from your skin & hair back to your face.

Its definitely hormones, but im scared of birth control because it messes with the bp.
So im going all natural and living with it.
