Ok, so I am going to go to the dr about this, but I'm posting anyway for some reassurance/ advice/whatever.
I have always had irregular periods and for at least a couple of years I've also had irregular bleeding between periods too, which can last a week or more, and sometimes is hard to distinguish between a real period or not (my periods can be very weird). And often the blood is black/ brown blood too (as in brown mucus) or mixed with red blood. idk why it happens. It's got me concerned because recently I had an odour I couldn't identify for about a week, with normal mucus, and then yesterday I got the mixture of brown mucus and red blood, and I thought that maybe my period had started, but it hasn't, and the smell is still there so it must be the blood I can smell but it is weird to smell it before there is even any evidence of it. So... could this be from an ovarian cyst or something? Before anybody asks I am not pregnant, am a virgin. And what will happen at the drs? I'm in England.

I found that... maybe it will help. ((((((((((silver_queen))))))))))) from what I've heard... clots can be different colours (black, brown, or red) during your period. Beyond that though... I'm not much help. Have you ever had an infection? It could be a yeast infection (smell) I think. I'm not a doctor, but thought I'd try to help. When is the doctor's appt?

Yep, it can normally be all different colors (old, etc.)
Women's cycles can all vary as well. Endometreosis (sp?) can cause bleeding outside of the period with pain, etc. HOWEVER... What does concern me is the odor. Anytime an odor comes up from nowhere, it should be checked ASAP. With a combination of the irregularity and odor, I'm glad you're going to get checked ASAP, hon. KD

The best thing is to go to the doctors and get it checked. Know that we all go through things like this at one time or another. Dark blood is just a sign of old blood and for some reason, it is not all coming out at once, is what I think. I hope that you feel better and the doctor appointment went well.... the first trip to a GY can be very scary but don't stress over it and understand that all us women go through it. You will be fine.

Thanks for the replies
![]() My first step will be seeing my GP (should be this coming Thursday), will I be referred from there or will (hopefully she lol) be able to deal with it? Kimmy the odour I could smell was the blood is all ![]() And as for the bleeding, it MAY be a period, idk. Usually my periods are quite heavy and I know for certain when I have them (aching) but for this, whatever it is, I only need a pantyliner... and my 'period' last month was the same (very light and only lasted about 3 days, usually 7)... maybe my hormones are off? ![]()

Ahh, ok. If he odor you notice is only associated with the blood (especially the dark), I wouldn't be nearly as concerned then. I misread and that's good then.
![]() Alot of women have irregular and/or painful periods and will get on the pill to help that out. Have you thought about that? For instance oldest daughter played sports and it was good for her to know when she was starting. She didn't have alot of cramping, but got on the pill for mostly a "start date" even though not active sexually. Youngest daughter was always regular but they were extremely painful with really bad PMS and got on the pill for that. Several years ago when just starting peri-menopause I was having very irregular stuff going on and often. They put me on the pill to help that even though I'd had my tubes tied 16 years prior. It helped alot. There are several reasons (other than birth control) that a woman might get on the pill, so it might be a consideration for you to straighten all this out? It might be something worth thinking about then mentioning to the dr. hon. Good luck! KD

That's great that you're going to the doctor, as it is better to be safe than sorry as the saying goes.
If you're over 40, you could be going through perimenopausal symptons. I've had the problem of spotting or irregular bleeding between periods for about 2 or 3 years now, although it has tapered off in the past few months. Doctor did a biopsy twice (OUCH!!!!!!! ![]() I'm not sure if that is a sympton of a cyst, it could be.
