I filled out the on-line application for employment insurance at service Canada today. But I'm worried. It said on the site that you have to file for employement insurance within 4 weeks of being let go or your application could be denied. I thought you had to have your Record of Employement (ROE) to apply so I'd been waiting. I e-mailed my old employer today about getting the ROE issued. It's just one more piece of stress I didn't need. Of course i won't be eligible for benefits until January, after my severance runs out, but I want to make sure I have the benefits in place, in the unlikely event that I don't find a job before then.
This is all new to me, and really complicated - I really hope I don't have to file an appeal just because I was a little late filling the initial application. --splitimage |

I hope it works out for you splitimage and everything goes smoothly in the new year. How smart of you to get it going. I'm sure you will be able to explain about the employer paperwork snafu if they try to turn it down and I think you have plenty of time before the new year if there's a problem.

thanks guys - I've been approved. The thing is it's kind of unfair. I'm eligible for a number of weeks EI based on how long I'd been working, but they start counting the weeks based on when you file, not when you start receiving benefits. So even though I'm not eligible to receive benefits until mid Dec, due to getting severence, the time still counts against my eligilble weeks. That seems unfair to me.
Plus now I have to report in every week on availability to work, which is a bit awkward since I'm IP at the moment. This is all a new learning experience for me. --splitimage |

Splitimage,
They have their 'rules' and frankly sometimes they don't seem sensible but I guess they have to start and stop somewhere. They do have disability EI I think if your regular benefit run out. You only have to have a Doctors approval or something and give them access to your medical records. Hope your finding yourself, Sincerely Hunny
