i've been meeting with recruiters all last week and this week, and there all saying the same thing that the market is really soft right now. I originally told one recruiter that I wasn't interested in a job, because it was below my minimum salary. But now I'm getting scared, so I emailed him and said I wanted to apply for it. On the plus side it's with a big company so there'd be opportunity for advancement, but I'd probably have to give up my car as I can't see affording it and insurance payments on the lower salary.

I don't know - maybe I'm panicking and should try and hold out til I find something at a higher salaray, but I want to get back to work.

It just feels really discouraging to be applying for a job that pays the same as what I was making 10 years ago. And I still have to get the job.

I can appreciate the feeling of "stepping backwards". This economy is tough, I don't care who you are. Personally, I'd be happy making what I did 10 years ago, but that's just me. I especially love the thought of getting on with a big company and having my foot in the door. But again, that's just me.

Just a suggestion, apply to all jobs and see what happens. No need to fret over pay until you actually get an offer. And then you might be able to bargain your salary up enough to make it palatable for now. That would give you a comfort zone from which you could job hunt from again.

Wishing you the best!

Thanks Notz, your advice is sensible as always.

Had a very frustrating job hunt thing today. I decided to check my computer spam folder in case a receipt that my dietician was supposed to e-mail me landed in there. Nothing from the dietician, but there was an email from a company that I'd applied to through an annonynmous e-mail address for a controller positition. The email said to contact them ASAP for an interview. So I called, and explained what had happenned, and the woman I spoke with said she'd have to get back to me tomorrow after seeing if they were still interviewing.

If I lost out on an opportunity due to my spam filter, i'm going to be seriously annoyed.

oh i hope you get an opportunity to be interviewed! i know with the job market like it is it's extremely frustrating and discouraging while looking. the good thing is you have great skills. hoping that all your efforts will become fruitful.
as for the big company offer...that is something i would consider cause it would get your foot in the door and i assume health benefits. if you do accept their offer i would make it contingent on a job review in 3 months for them to consider an increase in salary. also i would ask them what do they offer for employees being offered growth in job placement.
