Hi! I want to be a psychologist when I am older. In the beginning, I felt like it would be a great idea, since I have so much exposure to mental illness. I myself have ADHD and OCD. I have gone through bouts of depression, anorexia, bulimia, panic attacks, sleep apnea, etc. my sister is bipolar and sensory processing disorder as well as ADHD. But then i was thinking, will that experience make me biased? Is it better not to have firsthand experience because that way u can stay emotionally detached? I feel like if I was a therapist, I would too personally relate to the clients. But is that a bad thing?

I had similar concerns when I was looking at career options. But I finally decided that mental health is my passion so now I'm now in school to be a therapist.

One of my therapists was really against me pursuing this career because she felt that I couldn't help others if I'm not well myself. She definitely has a point! That's why I'm working hard to get my issues under control. But I think having struggled with mental health issues makes us more empathetic to our future clients.
Thanks for this!

Dr. Hallowell keeps writing and practicing while he is ADD. If this is a passion, why not look into it?
Thanks for this!

A lot of people choose to go into a field because they had experiences that led them to be interested in becoming something they can relate to.

It's a lot of years of hard work, my cousin is going on his 7th yr of studies - psychology is basically research. Therapy, counseling, or being a social worker would be great options
Thanks for this!
