I was laid off 11 years ago before the company I worked for was shut down. I couldn't find a job and opened a daycare that I ran until a year and a half ago when I swallowed my pride and took a job I had no interest in just to rejoin the professional world.

A few days ago I learned that as part of restructuring my current employer is doing, my job is being eliminated. I was given the option of talking a half time position in my same pay grade (and they'd fire the woman who currently holds the position) or accept a demotion at a significant pay cut.

Tonight I've spent some time screwing around on Linked In and found a job opening in my dream job with a company with a really good reputation. What's better, two of my former coworkers from my former company work there. I want to apply, but I'm hesitant.

A few weeks ago my husband found a lump on my breast. I saw a doctor who also found a "thickening" and is sending me for testing to determine if it is cancer. I feel like I need to stay with my current position as I now qualify for FMLA and have short term and long term disability insurance, but don't want to miss out on an opportunity. I'd hate to apply for this position and nail and interview only to find out I have breast cancer and cannot take the position. There aren't many reputable companies with good working conditions left in my former field and I cannot afford to burn any bridges. At the same time, this might not be cancer and I may miss out on an opportunity. I don't know what to do...

thoughts are with you, through this.

How long, before test results?

Interviews take time, you can always apply. *crossing fingers for you*

Hmm, a demotion, or reduced hours same pay grade? Considering your health scare, part time, if you do need fmla, could work out, upon return from time off. And actually, could extend you a bit, if you need drs appts, schedule when not working. Hoping it's nothing, but part time could be a better choice, as no guarantees on other job, yet...

I can't afford part time nor would I feel right taking someone else's job. She is a good worker and a friend and I couldn't do that to her. Besides, I can't afford the pay cut. Especially if I end up off of work. I will only get 60% of my pay if I do and 60% of my half time salary is peanuts.

I have no idea how long it will be before I have the results. On Wednesday they are doing an ultrasound to determine if the next step will be a biopsy or MRI. The last time I needed an MRI it took a month to get in.

I fear if I do apply they may offer the position and I will have cancer and get fired because I'm not covered under FMLA and need time off. I also fear I will first find out I have cancer and then they'll offer the job and I'll turn it down and burn a bridge. I can't afford any bridge burning.

Dream job? Apply! You are trying to make decisions on a "maybe". You can always turn down the job and you still have gotten to interview practice.

You aren't doing anything to your friend. Your employer is.

I'm so glad the health news went well-- I read your OP and became nervous. Really hoping you get that job!
