So I recently applied to a job at a daycare center and now they want to do a background check!
Will my history of past hospitalizations show up on my background check? What usually shows up during a background check? Will they be able to see my medical records? |

Not sure where Jump City is. If you are in the USA you are protected by HIPAA & hospitals cannot reveal that.

medication. If the company were to question something, they could ask for some type of form from a doctor that your condition/medication will not interfere with your duties.

I've never had any trouble with that ( I've been in the hospital too) when they do a background check, they want to make sure you don't have any arrests, etc. I've taken drug tests before too, and even though I take meds that didn't show up Good luck with getting the job! ![]()

They are looking for things that would put the kids at risk. Anything else is not of interest. Usually an outside firm does it and they are instructed not to share irrelevant information. I just got a job with an FBI check because it is regulated. Never asked about anything medicine related.

It's probably a criminal background check, often limited to the state you are currently living in. Your medical records won't be a part of that unless they were court ordered.

I've had background criminal checks done as I work with foster children. They never asked about meds. Doctors reports are strictly confidential .

As those have said above, and you cannot be denied a job because of a hospitalization history - that would be discrimination

I agree it would be discrimination.....but I know 1st hand that there are ways - legal ways that companies will have you fill out paperwork after they unoffically offer you the job and ask you to disclose your medical information for HR. Plus they need to be certain that you can physically handle the job. Not saying in this current situation it would matter...but consider a mechanic on a type of med that would make it dangerous for them to be working with a vehical hanging over their head. The reality is that most companies are more interested in protecting themselves than protecting you - I hate it but it is true in so many cases.

It depends on what the job is. There are jobs that you can not do with physical or mental limitations. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

If their application asks about mental health history, don't lie or if they find out at all (or if you have future problems, you won't be able to use past ones to "help" you; like if you need accommodation) you'll be fired for lying and "that" you lied (even if not about what) will probably follow you. It is better not to get a job than to get it with false information.

They can't ask. They might try to find out but what they can get is limited. They can ask about criminal history and you should definitely not lie for that. As for medical you may be within your right to decline to answer in which case they better have a legal reason for asking or open themselves up for prosecution.

Agreed! Funny how some times they worry about the potential employee that is taking care of themselves and not worry about those that do not take care of their mental health.

Update!
I recently got a phone call from someone who said they were calling on behalf of the daycare center that I applied to and they said they needed me to confirm some information. Does this sound legit? Is this standard for background checks? When I went to the interview the woman told me that the background check was automated, so... do I still need to confirm information? |

Yes. Just don't give them information.
