I am studying a computer career. I am psyched up about making my way, after a few failures due to mental illness. How are you managing the careers with your medication... any relapses because of stress?

I am a database engineer. Production admin work is the most stressful career in IT. Lost data = lost business. On call schedules and very little downtime. I would avoid that one. I did that for a little while and decided it was better to do BI work and take a cut in pay. The nice thing about database work is it suits a lot of different personalities and you can switch roles pretty easily. A lot of consulting companies hire right out of college. Those places work you crazy hours. It is great for first time experience but if stress is a concern I would not seek them out.

I use to have that same job working with MySQL/Postgresql databases in a Linux environment. Ended up quiting after a while and switched to web development. If some CSS looks funny any IE instead of Firefox it isn't a big deal and far less stress.

Although it is not always an ideal substitute but a true one, if it is not enjoyable it is time for a change...which is as good as a rest ;-)

I personally like fast paced environments. And I like DBA work. And of course a good pay check. I don't like on call. If it wasn't for that I would do it. I've actually been ready for a change but it ain't so easy. Unfortunately what is enjoyable doesn't often pay as well
