I got a new job in March. I came from a job with fantastic bosses and coworkers, and I've come to this job hoping for the same...

There was an incident a few weeks ago, where we were ordering new uniform. I wrote a list of what I needed and gave it to my boss. She looked at it and said "Are these a size bigger than what you're wearing? Because the uniform you're wearing doesn't fit you at all." I have never been more embarrassed! Then, when the uniform DID arrive, she refused to let us even touch it, until she was there to make sure it fit correctly...

How humiliating! And to add on, I'm always put on the late shifts (she NEVER rotates them) and I live the furtherest away from work. One of my coworkers was fantastic, like I've been to her house for drinks and movies and girls nights and crap like that...and then some days she doesn't speak to me and treats me like I'm a piece of **** on the floor!

I had no time off to study for exams, even though I asked for it, and she even tried to make me come in on the day when I had my exam, which she'd known about for months!

I just want your opinion, am I overreacting? Am I just being paranoid? Because it's making me extremely anxious and depressed and I'm ready to move jobs.

It sounds like it's time to start looking for a new job! You have had a good job before, so you know this isn't the way things should be. I hope you find something better soon!

Hello hurting, it is a real shame that some bosses let the status go to their head! You deserve to be treated much better! Yes, go look for another job, best of luck!

I would certainly move jobs if you do not like where you are. But there are lots of jobs where there are problems and coworkers/bosses we do not like. You may want to work on their affect on you? So your uniform did not fit you the way your boss wanted it to; that is not about "You" -- You are the right size, it is the uniform that did not fit! Likewise, there are jobs with uniforms (I'm thinking of the Dallas Cheerleaders) where it is very important to the people in charge that they look a certain way. That is kind of the point of uniforms and I know there are lots of people who don't like uniforms (thinking Catholic school girls :-) and try to change them, etc. and that can damage the image of the company (or the owners/bosses can perceive it that way). I would practice not taking things personally. If your boss needed you to work, your studying would naturally take second place, you are working for them, they are not working for you. I do not know that many jobs will give you "extra"/any time to study during work times. You have to go to school and study on your own time. It is nice when there are benefits we like but that is not a guarantee. Can you go back to your old job you liked better?

If you are working for a chain operation, I would still see if I could get a job with the same group as in the other town. It could just be that management of where you are now is not as friendly overall as where you were. I would maybe research all the possible places you want to apply on the Internet and see what their corporate policy is like. For example, McDonald's has "Hamburger University" but I don't think Burger King does. Starbucks has some awesome training/material, has turned people's lives around just working for them. I would see what websites I really liked, what was attractive to me then go see if they were as good as they look :-) I see you are in Australia and don't know what types of places you have, etc. but I'm sure most of them have Web sites?

Ah, yes, the Uniform Nazi ... I had issues with one of these myself, but she backed off after I let her know a few things about what is and isn't acceptable ...

She is definitely out of line and crossing boundaries in such a manner that she could be brought up on sexual harassment charges if an employee so desired ... The people who order our uniforms aren't in charge of dressing us, just supplying what we need.

Print this out and anonymously place it in her inbox ... It might just save her arse from getting into trouble with human resources when she comes across an employee that won't just sit there and put up with her inappropriate and unnecessary Bull@#$%!

Sincerely,
Pfrog!

It's really hard to go from a good work environment to one that is less than desirable. I really feel for you! I think it's reasonable for you to be offended by what your boss said about the uniform. As a manager, she does have the responsibility to make sure her employees meet standards, but there were certainly many more tactful ways she could have handled it if she felt you weren't dressed according to company policy. Did they give you an employee handbook when you were hired? If so, it may contain information on this and also about how to handle a grievance if you feel she's not treating you correctly.

If there are other employers hiring for your type of work, you can always check around and see if you can find a better position. It used to be bad to switch jobs a lot but today it is quite common, especially if you can find one that pays better or has better benefits. This makes it easy when you go on an interview and they ask you the question, "Why are you looking for a different job?" ADVANCEMENT, OF COURSE!

No way are you overreacting! I'd be feeling the same way. If this happens again put her in her place. Of course she's your boss and you'll have to be careful about what you say to her, but she has no right to treat you that way. I'm sorry this happened to you and if you feel like you need to switch jobs do so. Only I would suggest you find a new job before you quit the other one.
I wish you the best of luck

Thanks for this! I certainly will have a look, I do work in a chain store and there's some much closer to where I live too! Thank you

How are things going for you now?

Hi there, they're going okay, I have two weeks off because I've just had surgery, so I'm pretty glad to be away for a bit. Hopefully it all goes okay when I go back! Thank you

It's great that you've had a break from that stress , but not so great that it was because of surgery. Hope that went well! I'm studying also; I'm in my fifth semester of college, and I have three more to go to finish my program. Sometimes I wonder if I'm in the right field. Are you happy about what you are studying?
Thanks for this!

Social work. I've had a variety of jobs in my life, many in the accounting/clerical field, so this will be a "second career" for me. How about you?

It's great that you love what you are studying so far. Sometimes I have to remind myself that life is never perfect; it's always a process. One part of it may be fantastic while another is just not working. I have to admit I can make what isn't working even worse by focusing on only the bad parts. Do you find that to be the case too?
