How do I answer this question at an evaluation?? I've always struggled with it, usually because I guess I've always assumed/wished I wouldn't be here in 5 years.

that gave me a giggle...I understand your challenge..so why not make up something socially appropriate that you can use each time. it would be best to apply it somehow to the job you are applying for. but something like I would like to be supervisory position in my place of employment, enjoying spending time with my family, attending night school to get a degree in....(maybe apply schooling to job)....that's all I can come up with since I don't have many future hopes either...lol....take care

Frankly, I don't know. I don't even worry about where I see myself tomorrow. Day's worry is enough for the day.

I hate this question and refuse to answer it. When I get asked it in job interviews I make myself sound as ambitious as possible, but really I just want to be making enough and perhaps in a happy marriage.

Rich and very wealthy. Gorgeous women all around me. Bringer of world peace. To be praised for my new religion of being a demi-god. Pretty much anything that fulfills my narcissistic fantasies!

I usually just take some things I'm working on and make an optimistic prediction. From what I understand it's about gaging how motivated you are to do more than the absolute minimum. If I'm writing a lot of short fiction, I might say that I'm hoping I'll have some of it published and be able to make a little income on the side. If I'm a student, I'll say I'm looking forward to graduating and looking for work in my field.

You need to make an answer in the context of the employer.
In the interview, try to get a feel of what kind of company they are before that question comes up. If there is a back and forth exchange of questions and answers, use it to your benefit. Ask questions such as "what can a person do to be proactive and seek opportunities for growth?" If you get an answer like "we have a lot of people who started out in this position and now they are managers/leads..." you have something to use. That's where you need to answer this question and say, "It would be great to gain a high skill level where I can take a leadership role here. I would like to be leading a project and managing a team..." or something like that. If they give you a response which isn't helpful like "oh just do your work and show up, blah blah," say this: "In 5 years, I would like take a more active role here by ______" and then continue on. Notice the key word "here." You need to let the employer know you aren't just thinking about you. You are thinking about how to benefit them, too. When employers ask this question, they aren't thinking about whether you're still gonna be there in 5 years. They ASSUME you will be there. They want to know if you are going to be comfortable with taking on more responsibilities, leadership roles, etc. It's not always about getting promoted. |

Who knows where we will be in 5 years. I myself hope to be well and I hope you will be well in 5 years too. All the best.
