Can you list any jobs/careers you think might be good for someone with an anxiety disorder (such as PTSD, or generalized anxiety disorder, or social anxiety)?
I was thinking about even going into healthcare again and becoming an EMT because maybe the adrenaline rush and chaotic events would pull me out of my anxiety (either that or make it worse). The only other options I can think of are stock room person, or some kind of night shift job where I'm left alone to do my work, or maybe a behind-the-scenes hospital job like in a lab or some office job, or a mail room person, or something that has to do with computers, or even a prep cook/chef? What kinds of jobs are out there for people with anxiety disorders?

Do you have any idea what type of work appeals to you ... what you think you would love doing? Knowing that you are the anxious sort is helpful, but loving your work will offset at least some of the anxiety. When you love what you do, you are likely to invest yourself in it and your confidence will grow. Having confidence that you are good at what you do is a great antidote to anxiety.

Dear Little Lulu,
I'm in a similar situation. I've been on Temporary Disability for the last year and it ends this month. I have to get a F/T job that pays decently in order to pay my rent and bills. I want to work as a Case Manager in Mental Health which I did 2 jobs ago, but ended up leaving that job for stress/ anxiety issues,as well. Afraid no one will hire me with my 2 Temp Disability gaps in my resume, etc. I am going to get a job counselor to help me because I need a support system for everything. Have you thought about volunteering and seeing if something clicks for you? Scooterb ![]()

I have all of those anxieties, and I work retail. Is it ideal? No. Do I have to push myself to go in everyday? Yes. Do I still have nightmares about giving back wrong change? Yes. But once I get there I'm fine. I work at two stores, one is the Disney Store, for which I am very passionate and adore, and plan on having a lifetime career with the company, so it's worth a little discomfort now to reach my goals later. The other is an entertainment store, and while I'm not their ideal employee as I'm so far removed from pop culture that I have no idea what people are talking about outside of Disney (thankfully we're doing a killing with frozen products, which I can talk up all day), I'm doing well enough with sales to keep. It also helps that management at that store is extremely laid back and easy going.
It's all about finding something you'd enjoy which will encourage you to go, the more you go and do well will boost your confidence, and the more confidence you have the less anxiety monster shows up. |

I wouldn't go into a high stress job like EMT when you have anxiety! I get the concept: making yourself focus on the task at hand could distract you. But I think it most likely will only make things worse. Food industry jobs are also very stressful, so I think food prep is off the table. Plus you have to socialize a lot.
If you like books, working in libraries could be good. Or any sort of information filing. However I would go towards something that interests you. I think there are behind-the-scenes roles in any field, so it helps to be specific. If you're interested in healthcare, maybe you could try becoming a Physical Therapy aide? I'm not certain, but it seems like it would be less stressful than nursing or EMT work. It may also interest you, and acting as a healer may help heal you. Otherwise, there's working in museums, working in historical centers, acting as a tour guide for a famous house or small town. If you write, there may be ways to get into critiquing the arts, or food. I hope some of these suggestions help get you thinking ![]() |

I have general anxiety disorder, bipolar and schitzoaffective disorder. I want to work so bad, but then i wouldn't get my disability money which isn't enough to live on, and i would love to get a work at home job. i did sell avon and mary kay, which i loved but had to quit because i ended up in the hospital on a pshyc ward so i stopped selling. i was pronounced dead after 3 seizures, 3 times and am afraid to work in public in case i get another seizure. i had several jobs before i was in a couple of accidents and was also assaulted by an ex boyfriend. i got head injuries that ruined my mind too, i get nightmares every night too, therefore i do wish i could do something from home any suggestions?

You really need to know what sets off your anxiety specifically, and then discuss this with someone who helps people with disabilities get jobs. I am working with someone like this, and I had to be extremely detailed. I had to tell her all of my concerns, and tell her all of the things I felt I could not handle.

You don't have to be on disability, at least with the state agency I'm working with. They offer a return to work program for people who have been out of the workforce, and they offer assistance in finding jobs that are appropriate for the individual, interviewing skills, resume help, etc. I'm pretty sure that if you let them know that you did not want it disclosed that you are receiving guidance, it would not be revealed.

I don't know what agencies exist in your city, but I swear this will be easier when you have people helping you who understand your situation. Please keep me updated, okay?

I started out by trying a few different kind of volunteer jobs. It was hard sometimes and I admit I didn't always show up every week but as a volunteer there wasn't as much pressure to do so.
I found working outside was good for me. Things that were physically demanding but not high pressure or very socially demanding. Also online volunteer jobs. Very social but via text, you can walk away and come back when you are feeling ok. I actually ended up landing a very very good job by volunteering online. It's stressful half the time but I love it... And after a few years my anxiety has almost disappeared and I. Looking at the next step... Working in an office instead of from home ![]() |

I was playing a lot of computer games, so I volunteered to be customer support for one of the games and they accepted me, it was great for connecting to people as I wasn't leaving the house much due to my anxiety, and It was good to contribute to something.

In terms of online volunteer jobs there are a lot out there. Communities like this one need moderators, charities, support groups and special interests and hobby groups run Facebook pages that need people to maintain them, I've heard there's jobs typing up scans of old books that can't be automatically deciphered by software.

I suggest data entry. Often remote and not very anxiety inducing.
