I've half suspected that certain folk at my workplace were going through my stuff on a regular basis, but now I kind of have proof. I walk up to one of my coworkers and they start talking bout that endurance book, which I had downloaded to kindle a few days ago, but never mentioned to anyone. A few months ago all of the hundreds of audio files I had on my phone were simply no more after I left my phone under the visible eye of a coworker. What do I do? Do I tell HR about this? This can't be legal.

The first thing you do is find a way to put your things under lock and key. I don't think telling HR will do any good because technically, you have no real proof. Unless you can provide fingerprints or something like that you will only make yourself look bad if you complain. Like I said, find a way to lock things up and make it known that you are doing it and why. Your co-workers will get the message I think.

It's not legal. There was a huge scam ten yrs ago at CBS Philadelphia New Station. A male anchor had an affair with a female anchor and he went thru her email. They were both let go. I'm having the same problem as you: my landlord has gone thru my trash and I'm furious.

I doubt they will, I've tried various things just to fit in over the years and still I'm shut out and treated like this. There should be at least the basic respect of personal property. I've come back to my kindle being dozens of pages from where I was, etc etc.

I agree with jelly-bean ... when you are away from your desk, log out of anything electronic or take it with you and lock your desk. Going to HR probably won't be helpful and may cause more harm. Take care of yourself as it looks like no one else will!
Thanks for this!

Fleury, most likely, on your first day on the job, you were given the instruction to lock up your stuff. Not everybody does it, but companies advise new hires to do it. You might have signed something, saying that you understood that advice. It might have been in small print. I agree with the above poster that going to HR might make matters worse, especially since you do not have a definitive proof. Take the advice you have been given about protecting your valuables on the job from now on, and let go of the past.
Thanks for this!

I've already added a more difficult password for things and my phone is now in French, that should scare anyone away who wants to mess with it (et ouais je fais parler français) if that doesn't work i may just have to find other employment. My stuff will never be away from me from now on.
