My biggest strength comes in the form of language. I'm not a writer or a wordsmith, in fact where that is concerned I'm as creative as a rock. What I mean is I'm very good at learning language, like I could learn Irish Gaelic sitting on the bus to and from town simply by listening to people talk, and reading street signs. I can pick out accents such as what part of the English speaking world you are from, not to the street you live on but the region, like London England or Sydney Australia, that sort of thing. My second question is other than translation what would I be good at?

Just a suggestion- what about tutoring?

There are those who need to study a second language and really need the extra support.

Just a thought.

Depends on whatever other skills you have. I have a friend who did work at non-profit organizations with hispanic people. Many companies and organizations could use multi-lingual people.
Thanks for this!

I know this is not what you have been hoping to hear, but... acting . And eventually when you have more life experience, maybe writing, too. You are extremely perceptive in the sound world and you probably accumulate memories of how this or that person talked on a certain bus that you took 3 years ago in Scotland. That kind of perceptiveness, combined with memory, can make you a writer.

And, finally, ... a spy!

You could also study linguistics! I'm not sure what type of jobs that would actually lead to, perhaps teaching or linguistics research?

I remember seeing someone on TV (I think, hopefully it wasn't a fiction show!) that studied dialects in the US, and was able to help people with amnesia figure out what part of the country they were from, based on their accent and word choice! Hmm, not sure how big the market is for a job like that - but there ARE people who study things like that, like how accents change throughout the country, and why some people say "soda" and some say "pop" and some say "coke".

Can you *do* the accents too (aside from recognizing them)? If so, that opens you up to not just acting, but dialect coaching. Some people hire coaches to help get rid of an undesirable accent, and actors might use a coach to help gain an accent for a part.

There's also teaching your native language to newcomers to your country (if you can pick up enough of their language, it would help you communicate better with them), and just teaching languages in general.

Very cool... I love languages myself, though I don't pick them up as easily as you do. Good luck with it!

Normally you have languages and some other skill - lawyer, accountant, and so on. Lots of jobs in European Union organisations for the multilingual particularly for those with English as mother language. As an American you would not be regarded with the same grave suspicion that UK is regarded by our European buddies.

You could do a lot with that skill. You could work for a publishing company or even govn't work as a translator.

Linguistics. A friend of mine had a gift like that - he could learn languages by reading dictionaries. He does some teaching, some research, and a lot of work to preserve languages in danger of being lost.
