I do admit I enjoy working. I'm responsible for what I'm doing. Doesn't mean that I'm a fool, am i? I reach my work place at 5am, finish work at 7pm and my working shift is 7am-4pm for day shift extended to 10pm and oncall from 10pm-12pm the next day. I always work extra time without extra pay. I can work night shift from 10pm till 4pm the next day without even complaining. Bcoz some people re lazy and some people re selfish doesn't mean I have to work their parts. You selfish leader put me working 2 night shift and 1 extended shift in one week, thats ok. But not fulfilling any of my request to get just a few days off to enjoy the festive season, is this call exploitation? Being hardworking and responsible is my trait & personality. But instead she gave my extra workload and simply just give me few holidays in the days I wish to work is consider good to me? I want to celebrate Chinese new year just like other wish to celebrate Christmas or other festival. I'm so distress looking at the schedule, been thinking of bringing this matter to a higher level. Should I or shouldn't? Somemore we r the same level and she entering work much later than me, I'm so call a senior being exploit by junior really make me frust!!!

I can understand your frustration. I'm like you, a hard worker, taking on whatever I can to help out. People do sometimes exploit that but that doesn't make us fools. It makes us helpful and caring people. Sometimes that means we get walked on but I don't know about you but I can't just turn off my personality. Whether you go to a higher level would be hard for me to judge, but if you don't think it will cause you more trouble in the long run then you might want to consider it. I tend to just suck it up as to not make waves, but sometimes you have to stand up for yourself. I hope you get it worked out. I'm sorry you may miss celebrating your holiday.

I also have had that tendency and have found that I enjoy life more now that I've stopped working for free. I would probably bring up the schedule unfairness.

If you work extra hours over and beyond your contract, it is up to you. You may or may not be rewarded/appreciated as you deserve. Life is not fair.

People will always take advantage of nice people.
You have an excellent work ethic from the sound of your description.
As Hvert said, you'll be happier when you don't work for free.
Save your best for the people who truly care. Family, friends, etc..
Thanks for this!

(((Ne5o2))) You sound very ambitious. How long before your internship ends assuming you are in your residency. We have a T.V. show in the USA called Grey's Anatomy. Do you get it there? The interns are always being treated badly. Hang in there. Remember how far you've come. Just a little while longer. You can do it!!!! If you're not a resident, then excuse my comments...I may have miss interpreted House Officer. Be well!!!

Having a great work ethic, for me, has never been advantageous. Mediocrity always seems to prevail. I'm the type of person who will do my job even when no one else is around. I've only met a handful of people who were like that, too. If I could begin my work career over, I would do things differently. The most important (but painful) lesson that I have learned is this: It is far better to fly under the radar and maintain the status quo (no matter how stupid and screwed up it is!) than it is to be ambitious and try to improve processes at work.

Hard working is good but you also need to put your foot down and take care of yourself. Book holiday time off and limit yourself to a set amount of hours each week otherwise you'll be good to nobody.
