Medical Coding - Anyone have experience?

Does anyone have experience taking the AAPC training to become a certified professional coder?

I'm looking for some kind of job that could be flexible & work-from-home. I'm wondering if medical coding might be a good route for me.

I'm just curious if anyone's gone through the training, received certification, and landed a job coding. (Or if you know someone who has?)

Is the job truly "flexible?" as far as what time of day you choose to complete the work? Has it been a positive experience for you? Is it stressful?

i don't have experience but Ive considered this job in the past and from what i found its a saturated market because of all those short term for-profit schools, it can be hard to break into. Most employers are asking for 2-3 yrs experience. But if you have a passion for healthcare Im sure you'll do great

I would go at it from the opposite direction, look at real jobs that are being advertised for medical coding in your area and see how they work? Looks like a lot of them in my area are for temp agencies so I'd go talk to those agencies and see what the demand is and how the reality is:

I'd also talk to my own doctors' staff(s) and see how billing is done in their office (maybe a receptionist who'd been with the doctor for awhile took a course and worked her way up?) and what agency, if any, they use, that sort of thing.

Thanks for your thoughts, Perna. I live in a really rural area where there aren't really many jobs of any kind. I did find a reputable website that lists real temp and remote jobs, and it seems like there are a lot of jobs available through that route. I'm just trying to decide if the money and time spent on training would be worth it.

I do know a few people who have experience coding remotely, but, as you said it was temporary and they don't know of any job openings. (They got into it without any experience at all, which is confusing to me! Right place, right time, I guess.) I may talk to someone from a Drs. office here just to get their perspective. Thanks.
