I have an interview today. I get so much anxiety, I sweat, I fear I'm not good enough. I have been employed gainfully for years, however this last year I feel like I cannot do anything and I have crippled myself with anxiety. I feel like my medication is a crutch to dealing. This sounds absurb, no?

Hello dolphingirlie: No, this doesn't sound at all absurd. I noted that you wrote you've been gainfully employed for years. I don't know how old you are but I do think that anxiety becomes harder to manage over time. Also, interviewing isn't the same as working. The fact that you've been gainfully employed for years probably means you haven't had a lot of opportunity to practice interviewing. So it would make sense that you would be experiencing anxiety related to your interview. Anxiety can certainly feel crippling. I have always struggled with a lot of it as well & it has prevented me form doing many things I might otherwise have been able to do. Anyway... I wish you all the best with your interview as well as with your ongoing efforts to manage your anxiety.

Anxiety can cause "dry mouth" which happened to me a few weeks ago, but I already had it so it was made much worse. Also, the night before, I took something to calm me so I wouldn't lay awake and worry about it.

In hindsight, I found out that wasn't a good idea. It might have made me stay asleep, but it made my salivary glands even more dry, which made me more anxious, which made my mouth even drier, etc.

Not having enough saliva can make it difficult to speak and swallow. Anyway, I couldn't speak much which probably did me in. I didn't want to reschedule it cause doing that would just make me worry even more. I just wanted it to be over.

Hi,

Feeling anxious before the interview is perfectly normal. Have confidence in you. You should try to reach interview venue half to one hour early. Do not continue thinking about the interview or how you are going to perform. Divert your mind to something else. When you enter interview room, wish interviewer and give them a nice smile. Their return smile will make you comfortable. When you sit, take a deep breath and relax.

All the best.
