I have been a Paramedic and Firefighter over 30 years, and have dealt with a lot of bad situations over the years. My latest is really bothering me.
A call goes out for a structure fire a little before noon, but they don't send EMS (me)...9 minutes later they say they cant confirm the home is empty and request EMS. As we are pulling up the radio goes nuts wanting us emergent at the house that's almost impossible to get to due to all the other apparatus that's pulled in...Call several times on the radio to try and get info on what's happened and get nothing......5 minutes later we get to the house and find the fire fighters doing CPR on a woman mid 50s that was found just 6 foot from the front door, 21 minutes after the 1st dispatch for the fire. After intubating and drugs we get back a pulse....just for a couple minutes...and then continue to do CPR and meds and everything we could think of for next 30 minutes as we took her to a trauma center.....when we arrived she still had an electric activity but no pulse....and helped the ER work her for another 20 minutes....When the Dr said stop I felt like I and our system had failed her... What to do now???? |

Accept that you did everything in your power to help her under the circumstances. If you suspect that the system somehow failed her, see if you can pinpoint the failure and call it to the attention of those responsible. Thank you for protecting us.

I was a volunteer firefighter for almost 15 years and an EMT for about 5 years, so I can understand where you are coming from. Sometimes it seems like everything can go right but the situation still ends badly.
I guess I don't really have any advice, I just wanted to let you know that I know how it feels.

Thanks Folks. An extensive discussion and review of the complete call with input from several Doctors including a 20 year burn specialist from Augusta Burn Center, everything possible that could be done was done, and within a timely manor.
