So I work in logistics delivering packages door to door. I knew when the holiday season started I would notice a increase in hours. But in the past 3 weeks the shortest shift I work was 12 hours. The rest have all been 13,14 and even a 16 hour shifts. I find this utterly exhausting and live off of energy drinks, power shots, and subway. Not only is this not healthy too me, but it's hard on my wallet. So all this money I'm making is being used while I'm working. On top of all this since I'm the final step in the delivery process I'm usually the one to catch the blame. If the the truck is two hours late and I can't get all my deliveries off then I'm told to stay out regardless of how late it is. Then if I don't because I'm falling asleep at the wheel I get written up. Then I'm constantly harassed by my boss to work on the weekend after I had already worked 60+ hours that week.
At this point I'm seriously debating whether the money is worth the toll it is taking on my mind and body. If it wasn't for my girlfriend I would've done something drastic by now. |

I had a similar job several years ago, with a lot of driving. Great money but crap working conditions. FWIW I started to make my own sandwiches, even if it was just bread and cheese, and switched to caffeine tablets and water because the energy drinks just tasted too sugary after a while. Cheaper too. I stuck with it as long as I could until I found a better job. If it helps, maybe remember that many of the people receiving your deliveries will find great joy from those gifts. I know it sucks but hang with your girlfriend and together you will both make next year a much better one for the two of you.

That sounds incredibly stressful and difficult, I'm so sorry. Nobody should have to endure 16 hour days (especially with a job like that, where you're driving, so if you get tired you're risking your own safety and others). Plus, everyone needs time to unwind, relax, and be off the clock.
I don't have any good advice. I hope going back to school works out for you, and that if you decide to stick with the delivery job for a bit, until you find something else, that the hours get back to normal soon. (Do you expect things to be back to normal after this weekend, or will there still be a lot of late deliveries to make over the next few days?) Oh... and let me also say, thank you for what you do. I just got a surprise package from my mom. I live far from my family and am pretty socially isolated, so the surprise really brightened up my holidays, and I'm very grateful that there are people out there who are willing and able to make package delivery happen (though, as I said, I very strongly think you should be treated better, and not spend every waking moment of your life working!) *thanks* and good luck with school and the future! |

Here's a little update
Yesterday they sent a message to all the scanners stating that we will be working Christmas Eve with regular hours. Regular hours being for me a 12+ hour shift. Which means I would not get off until at least 10pm that night. I told my boss that this is BS because he told me we wouldn't be working Christmas Eve. So I stated"I will not be working any this weekend. You can just tell me Tuesday if I should bother coming in" I wouldn't be putting myself in a tight situation since I don't have a family or any large payments excluding rent. |

This is my personal opinion and I don't mean to offend anybody but to me, most jobs involving a lot of long hours and manual labor such as the OP's job are little more than scams to screw over the poor and make the rich richer.
For the amount of work people working jobs like the OP is they should be shown more respect and they should be paid more, but no. The CEO and executives just neeeed another private jet, fancy house, and expensive suit lol People wonder why I have developed such an aversion to work. Why struggle and be miserable when life is so damn short? |

So I gave my notice and this Friday will be my last day. My girlfriend spent the weekend with me and she woke up with it coming out both ends. Now I'm feeling extremely crappy.
