Just realized something new about myself this week. I would rather be fired than quit.

I am pathologically loyal and committed. The company I work for is as dysfunctional as they get and it shows in their bottom line. I have been waging a one person war to keep it afloat. On Thursday, I asked if they would please fire me. I was as shocked as they were. They asked me why and I told them:

The owner is trying and failing to manage this company. He has no work experience and even less management experience. The company runs on unleaded nepotism, incompetence, and illegal business practices. It is the most hostile work environment I have ever had the displeasure of working in and the only reason that I am still around is because I feel like it would fall apart if I left because I would have to take my ten fingers and toes that are plugging up holes in the dam with me. You gave me a job when I desperately needed one so I feel compelled to stay out of loyalty but would love to be released without guilt. Firing me would do that.

They denied my request and promised me that we would have a meeting with the rest of senior management from every department on Friday and sort everything out. Turns out they had no time for the meeting. They did have time for a three and a half hour lunch at the casino down the street though. I am crafting my resignation letter today.

Interesting revelation about myself though...

Good for you!!

Loyalty, dedication and thankfulness are qualities that are not found in many people in the workplace these days.

I hope you find another work environment what're it is valued and not taken advantage of!!

There is definitely no shame in quitting a job that's toxic to your well-being.

This article gives 6 good reasons you should be able to quit your job without feeling any shame or guilt.

I tried everything to make my tech-temp job work but after 2 months, the toxic work environment due to being marginalized, belittled, and sabotaged was enough for me to tell my temp agency in detail via a complaint report along with forwarding them my completed work, that enough is enough, I deserve to be treated with respect as a temp in a workplace. Toxic work cultures are bad for one's health.

Agreed. I can't bring myself to quit my job but would be happy if I was fired. That way it wouldn't be my fault and no one could blame me for giving it up.

That being said, I also can't get fired because I just can't stand people feeling badly about me and will kill myself to get a job done.
Thanks for this!

Well, here is the letters, already delivered:

Quote:
<insert GM's name>,

I am writing to give you my two week notice and thank <insert company name> for my employment over the last year and a half. While I'm not privy to all instances with all employees, I have seen two week notices given that have resulted in immediate separation from the company. Though I'm quite certain that no one needs my permission to terminate me immediately upon receiving this notice, it might be worth mentioning that I have no issues with that. Regardless of how things proceed, I want to say on a personal note, that it was a pleasure to work with you.

Sincerely,

<me>
I did actually enjoy working with the GM, but he is over-ruled by the owner often and is not able to stop the nepotism between the owner and his incompetent friends in high positions. Anyway, I made a commitment to myself that I would post the letter here to keep myself accountable and follow through. So, that's why it is here. Thanks.

Hi Emily! The owner texted me Monday morning and asked me to meet him at Starbucks before work. I said, 'Good morning!' He said, 'Give me your keys and security badge.' I am sooo glad it is over.

Well, look at it this way, sometimes the wrong way out is the right way in...towards a better opportunity. That's what I'm telling myself about my situation anyway.

Hopefully you can find something else better suited for you sooner than later.Good luck!
Thanks for this!

I used to have a loyal attitude, but I've become more strategically minded. Now I play my job offers against each other to get employers to raise their salary offers. Honestly, I am still getting underpaid relative to my schooling and experience, and I have not made it too far in the rising up the career ladder area, but I am getting better. Just today, I ended a part-time job, and I let the employer know that I was trading his part-time work for another part-time job that paid me higher wages. It's true and I only have limited time given I also have a full-time job, too. I deserve to get paid more, so it's a move in the right direction.
