I'm 17, and a college freshman. I'm interested in working in the dining hall close to where I live. The job itself seems easy, and everyone seems so nice to each other. I'm most afraid for the interview I guess. I was never involved in high school, nor am I now, thought I do want to be more involved next semester. But that's the thing.
I'm not sure whether I should wait until the summer or not. Next semester I want to start volunteering at 2 organizations (LGBT resource center and human society close by), so that could build my resume up. However, I'm barely able to afford my needs with what my family gives me. I know a common question is "tell me about yourself" and it should be professional rather than personal, but I don't know what to say if I have no experience! Or when they ask "name a time you were in a difficult situation" (or some variation. I never left the house in high school so I can't think of anything. What do you think? Wait? Figure some answer out without experience??? I really want to learn how to be independent and I think a job would be good for me.. maybe I'm pushing myself too much. I'm already kind of mentally unstable at the moment. :/ (depression, anxiety issues, physical health aka weight problems, etc) |

Just briefly talk about school then. “I’m a senior at ___ high school, I’m studying ____, my favorite class is ____. I’m planning to go to ____ (if you are planning college).
In my spare time I like to (read, or whatever it is you like).” Surely you can think of a difficult situation with school? Something you resolved in a positive way? Anyway, I don’t know what they’ll ask for that type of job. |

You can try some of the threads I’ve started in the depression forum. They have helped me with anxiety and depression

I'm in college right now.. lol. But yeah, I've tried the depressions and anxiety part of the site, but it's not rly enough. Better off seeking real counseling

Great idea! The few of my graduating college seniors who have never held jobs are not prepared for the real world. I wouldn't stress too much about the interview for that particular job. They really just want to know if you can get along with others, maintain a consistent schedule, show up on time, and that you have a decent level of responsibility, work ethic, and integrity. Smiling and staying positive during the interview will show them that you're a nice person with whom to work. Congrats on adulting!

Thank you! That's really calming. I agree and don't want to end up that way! I'm still a little indecisive since I don't want to overload myself with a job + so much volunteer work, but I'll keep that in mind.

It sounds like you have really good ideas! I would suggest telling your parents your ideas and telling them that you will need an allowance. Along with medication, sometimes facing your anxiety helps you tolerate things better. If you get a real counselor, that will probably help you a lot!! I feel excited for you. Please keep us posted.

I have some threads that are helpful, like replacing an anxious thought with a positive one. There are also DBT peer connections youtube videos on mindfulness and other topics. But yeah, therapy is better. Good luck. |
