Today I talked with an SSDI specialist at Soc. Sec. She told me the following so I share it with you.

If you get a job and you earn over 850.00/month gross income that counts as a trial work period. You get 9 trial work periods over a 60 month span. They can be used in any combination you want in that time frame. You can earn as much as you want in those trials.

After you use your trial work periods, you can earn up to 1080.00/ month without effecting your benefit. If you earn even a dime more than that in a month you are considered substantially gainfully employed and lose your benefit. All-in-one must be reported during the first six days of the month directly after the month you earned it. Ex: Income for August gets reported between September 1-6. Once you report you have a job they will adjust your My Social Security account so you can report your income online.

Hello there,

Not to be a downer but I would ask for “all” of that in writing. My sister talked to a SSA rep in person and they told her how much money should could make. A “year” later they mailed her a letter saying she owed them $5000. They cut off her SSDI check and Medicare. Now she is working two part-time jobs and making payments to SSA. If I get a job it will be full-time and I will be getting off my SSDI.

Yes, I agree with this. Each person should speak with SSA individually because what was mentioned here is for SSDI. There are different forms of social security, so it's very dependent upon what type of social security the person has. I have been through a trial period and done all this, so I know what it is from experience, but the rules change each year.

Also, if you don't file for your trial work period, they could just kick you off. You have to be very careful.

And the 9 trial work periods means 9 months. They can be nonconsecutive, but you only get 9.

So again, I'd get it in writing, signed, and dated from your SSA office, which is not hard to do.

As I mentioned here this was for ssdi. I do not know any of the info for ssi, or retirement benefits.

I’m kind of worried about this. I’m working 25-29 hours a week at $11 an hour. I worry about the 5 Friday’s in a month 3 times a year. I am especially worried about the Christmas season. I can handle if it they cut my SSDI. I’m pretty sure I can live on $200 a week. Especially since I’m still living at home. But people talking about owning SSDI money is what is concerning me. Yeah I’d be fine without my SSDI but I don’t want to be owing them money. What should I do? I can make $1,166. I’m not quite at that amount. This month is pushing it though. Plus I was on vacation earlier this month so my first paycheck wasn’t big. So to be pushing it is concerning. Plus work keeps asking me to work more and more hours. They say I’m one of their best employeesa and are constantly giving me all the hours. I can’t let them down.

What should I do? I’m already sending in my pay stubs. Is that enough or should I be doing more?
