i've heard folks talk about sponsors and just wondered what it is? i read a thing about AA UK but it doesn't mention that, just something about 12 steps and God, which is a bit of a worry as i'm an atheist.

anyways, what is a sponsor plz and is it relevant to uk AA does anyone know?

hi roz, AA's principals are the same thruout the world.
for the thoughts re god. in AA it can mean a power greater than ourselves. example-your group in AA.

Please don't get hung up on this, Roz. The 12-step program is an incredible one, and the higher-power concept is (as madisgram said) simply something greater than you that your can anchor yourself to.

Have you by any chance seen the American sitcom M.A.S.H.? If so, Radar had a terrific "higher power" that got him through everything: his Teddy bear. I'm not being facetious--it's whatever works.

thanks everybody. i've actually made the step of getting in touch with someone from AA, which i don't think i would have without speaking to folks here first. he sent me some leaflets by e-mail and a lot of reassurances about how things work. he also told me that, as everyone is nervous initially (i.e. lurking outside not sure about actually going in etc), that there is a number i can call and arrange to meet up with someone first and they can take me to a first meeting if i wish. so after easter, i will.
