So, my boyfriend's an alcoholic. It's got him pretty bad. He has said he needs to quit drinking, but he hasn't done it. He gets very paranoid and violent when drunk and I can't handle him anymore. Any advice on how I can "help" him help himself? Is that even possible?

Thanks,

I am so sorry you are dealing with this. I honestly don't think you can help someone who doesn't honestly want help. Please keep yourself safe. Your safety and well being must come first.

My best to you,

January

Jan's right. Unfortunatly we can't help someone who doesn't want it. Sobriety won't work for people who justneed it; they have to want it. Sounds like you have a decision to make. Love him through it and hope he comes around, or leave. When my boyfriend left me at the hight of my drinking, loosing him made me hit bottom and get sober. Maybe try an Alanon meeting? They're for loved ones of alcoholic/addicts. Good luck to you. =)

Thanks.

Think I'm gonna talk to him about AA tonight. Never know, he might prove me wrong and go. Question...

I notice you're in Phoenix. I'm in Tucson. I know of some young people's groups up there.

Sure thing, why don't you PM me your email address and I'll forward it to the group up there?

In the meantime, here's their myspace address:

http://www.myspace.com/valypaa

And I've sent them a message requesting an email address. They have an event this Saturday, they're hosting ASCYPAA - Arizona State Conference of Young People in AA. So they're doing events leading up to then.

I forwarded them your email. It may not help your husband until he's ready, but hopefully they'll be able to show you where to turn for you, and give you someone in the area who understands. =)

Didn't get them. Sometimes my e-mail blocks certain things, it's my e-mail at work. Can you send it to me here?

Thanks,
