A bit of background -I have a cannabis addiction. I am 33 and have been smoking since I was 13 - daily since I was 14. I have been to detox twice, with no success. I am fully engaged with counselling and attend an addiction clinic approx twice per week. My health professionals do not believe that quitting cold turkey is the best thing for me. They believe I need to ween my way off

So, recently, I ran out of money and drugs for three days. It was not a good three days. I now have cannabis, but am trying to use this opportunity to set some rules around my use. I have yhree rules set out, but it's the first night and I'm struggling already.

Anyone else done this or have any advice? Does it get easier after a period of time. Can doing this really help me cut back and eventually quit?

Any advice, experiences and support would be greatly appreciated x

Hello Thing,

I am an advocate of cold turkey. Reason? I think it is important to feel the full pain, depth, and complexity of your addiction so that you are truly humbled by it. This will help eliminate any and all delusions that you are in control.

Other than this, go with the one day at a time thing. Just try to commit to 24 hours without using. Many times this is far too long and we need to go hour to hour. You will have to literally Mantra "I can make it to 11 am without using" over and over until 11 comes, then change the Mantra to "I can make it until noon without using" etc etc making sure to actually feel the full power of powerlessness.

Good luck. It does get easier - for me this did not mean easier after a few days or weeks. It took several months into years. It's truly a lifelong struggle in my case. Seek humility.

I agree with Moogieotter. Cold turkey is really best because it gets out of your system faster. If you wean yourself off, the withdrawal phase goes longer and longer.

I'm not an addict but I'm having terrible SH urges right now and I just go hour to hour, I can make it until X hour, then Y hour...

If you are trying to wean yourself off you may want to get someone to actually keep your MJ for you so you can only have it at certain times...like medication in the hospital so it can't be abused.

Like above, if you truly want to quit cold turkey is the only way. Otherwise you're just lying to yourself. The only time i see weening off as necessary is for drugs with life threatening withdrawals.

I'm a daily smoker too. Although I haven't attempted to quit, I have tried to cut down. I too tried to set some rules around my use. E.g no smoking before 420pm haha, no smoking on work nights etc.

I've been doing great at not smoking during the day but still find myself smoking most nights.

Best of luck

not trying to promote my own thread, but it may help you OP.
http://forums.psychcentral.com/addic...quit-weed.html

I tried to quit cold turkey but it wasnt as cold. I smoked on day 2 and 3, just one joint. It helped a bit with the stomach aches. The first 3 days are the hardest and you'll have the cravings, maybe also some physical withdrawal like night sweats, diffculty eating/sleeping. this uncomfortable feeling, sweaty palms all day. Drinking tea and loads of water helped for me with my upset stomach.

these lasted for me about 3 days after that it got way better and after 2 weeks almost everything was gone, besides some of the cravings.
i smoked another joint on like day 6 and didn't like it at ALL, so that also motivated me to keep on going, but i do NOT recommend this.

cutting back can help, but I think cutting back is harder than quitting. maybe cut back for 2 days and after that stop it. Also remember no matter how long you've been clean, that one toke or one joint can kick you back into heavy daily use, so just DON'T do it.

You might want to talk to one of your Drs. about getting a prescription for Gabapentin. Among other things it's used to help reduce marijuana cravings. It's prescribed pretty regularly at my rehab.
