As part of my package from work, I got the services of an outplacement agency for 5 months to help with my career search. I had my first meeting with them today. When they asked why I had been let go, I decided to be totally honest with them and explained that it was because I had had a really bad drinking problem. It was really weird talking about it, because it's the first time I've talked about it outside of a treatment/AA setting - but I figured they can only help me if they know the whole story. The lady was really nice about it and said that they could help come up with a story around why I was let go. She just asked if I was sober now - how long I had and was I going to meetings! and then told me she had a cousin who'se been in AA for 14 years. I'm still really worried about what I'm going to say to future employers but it felt good being honest with her. I was just so relieved that she didn't freak out or look at me like I had 5 heads or something.

I'm going to vocation rehab tomorrow, sounds like something similar. I'm hoping to find out some tips for what to say about being out of work for over a year. Mine was do to the MS dx and I know that employers aren't supposed to discriminate but I'm afraid to say anything, so I'm hoping voc rehab will help with that.

As far as explaining to future employers why you were let go, they don't have the legal right to ask that I don't think. You can say you decided to take some time off from working. And leave it at that. I know we practice rigorous honesty in the program, but if its going to hurt you, its not necessary. And you really did take some time off of work, and thats all you have to say.

Good for you for being honest with the outplacement people though. And how uncanny that the lady's cousin is AA.

Very cool!!!!
