I would appreciate any insight. One school of thought says relapse is a natural function of full recovery. Another says it is intollerible and a function of ongoing addiction. Are they both correct? Wrong?

Both are correct: relapse by definition is a condition of addiction as well as intolerable. Therefore, it is necessary to understand what triggers relapse in order to control your addiction rather than allowing your addiction to controll you.

It doesn't really matter what you call them. All I know is that relapses make a person feel lousy. Are you all right Bmoz?

The best way out is to pour out/throw out everything and start again. And call a friend. Talk about it. Type about it.

Thanks for your concern. I have never been better. Thanks for your advice but I don't drink. Have many friends in and out of sobriety and would love to get to the bottom of it.

I have had several relapses but I keep thinking I always have a chance. a chance to choose, too... only sometimes I ignore it. I don't think I'm fully committed to recovery right now.

I had many attempts to stop drinking and many relapses, before I got serious about wanting sobriety. I think for me, it was because at the time the perceived benefits of drinking, numbing out feelings, outweighed the downsides. I had to lose my job and wind up in hospital before I was seriously ready to stop. Even after that I've relapsed a couple of times - the last time was November and I don't even recal what triggered it, it was so seriously not worth it. I've had to do a lot of work on underlying psych issues as well, which has made staying sober easier.

I know we disagree on a couple of points, in that I believe that alcoholism is a disease and so think that I'll always be at risk of relapse. But I know it's totally within my control to choose not to drink. The difficulty is I still want to occassionally so I have to keep reeminding myself of how bad the downside is of drinking versus the upside of staying sober.

You are so awesome for your share. Sobriety is worth all our discomfort. Thank you
