I was diagnosed with an eating disorder and go to a dietician... I don't know if anyone else goes to one, but I was wondering....she wants me to eat 3 meals a day...I can eat a lot of small meals a day but not a large meal, let alone 3 ... How do people do it....I really don't get it what if you're just full?

Why don't you ask her if you can do 6 small meals during the day instead of 3 larger ones? When I was first diagnosed, I was in the hospital and had 3 meals and 3 snacks a day. The meals seemed huge to me and they were compared to not eating anything except a child's portion for dinner. They had me eating constantly it seemed, really it was every 2 hours. Those days it was a "Thanksgiving dinner full" after every meal, not pleasant. That full/overly full feeling does go away eventually. In the hospital, if we did not eat everything that came on our tray, we would get supplemented. That sucked because you HAD to drink the Ensure regardless of how much it was and regardless of how full you were. The key was that each meal had X amount of calories and we needed them to fuel our bodies, therefore we had to eat everything. I was on a refeeding plan, so my meals were smaller at the beginning then they were when I was discharged 15 days later. I had to tell myself that it was just X more bites. When I went back into the hospital 4 months later, I was on a maintaince plan where my meals were bigger than before, but what a non-ED person would eat. There were a few occasions that I had that overly stuffed feeling, and it went away faster than before.

Talk to your dietician and be open with how you feel about eating the 3 meals a day. She is working for you. I wish you the best.

Well basically she said 3 larger meals and 3 snacks,,,to me it's just really weird because she said normally that's what someone should eat, but it seems like so much to me...

Hello there and good evening. Yes, I've had every ED over the last 30 or more years and I still am in the grip of another ED now. I REALLY do understand how you feel when you say it's difficult to eat big meals, even though a specialist would say that is what a ''normal'' person would eat, it's not normal for us! I've seen many specialists and most would gladly agree that we make a contract that I would try and eat a number of calories per day. It didn't matter how the meals would be spaced out but pref not huge amounts in one meal. I always went for 5 small meals and two snacks per day. As I've always had a problem with night~time binging, I'd save one snack (or two) for during the night. This seemed to work well. Contrary to what I thought and was terrified of, the weight did NOT pile on at all!!!. I'd def have a word with your nutritionist 'cos I'm sure he/she will be glad to work on that plan. Good luck and HUGS.

Sometimes what i do is make myself a large meal & eat at it all day when i get that full feeling i stop then in about 1/2 hour when the fullness is gone i eat more until i feel full...i can work on a large meal throughout the day..that way i get my nutrition without forcing myself to feel that overstuffed Thanksgiving feeling& when the food is right there..more chances i will snack on it & eat until it's finished. I was always a slow eater all my life..& would always get full without finishing a meal.

Im sure no nutritionist would approve of my method..but it works for me & has kept me out of the hospital...it takes a serious trigger for me to stop eating all together...& that is when i usually land in the medical hospital with IV nutrition...definitely not a good choice
