Tonight I watched this show called Earth 2100 on the history channel. I know stuff like this is a big trigger for me, but I stupidly watched it anyway. It talked about what could happen to our planet in the next century if we don't change the way we live. I don't mean to be pessimistic, but it seems highly unlikely that we will change enough to support our planet in the future. Has anyone else seen this show? Has your anxiety been triggered by it? It's got me thinking tonight, and worrying too.

When science fiction shows like that trigger me (yes, it's science fiction because they're just projecting their idea of what could happen but there are many ways it could go) I remember how old I am and how long I'm likely to live, etc. I'll probably die before 2040 so some of the things they talk about is "meaningless".
If there's nothing you, personally, can do about their projections, it's meaningless to you? Think of something you would like to do to help the planet and work on doing that. They're doing the show to make people aware, not to scare them. You heard how, at the last summit, we're all still arguing about climate change. Plant a tree or take some other action that will do a little bit in your corner to make it better.

I haven't seen the show - what the show about? I'm a believer in taking care of our earth. I also agree with Perna and these are projections rather than fact. Sorry it triggered your anxiety ((Indie). There's also a good thread in current events where I put up a video and ShadowWriter started the thread - but don't watch it, if you might be triggered. Where I live in Canada we are big reclyclers where the U.S. is just starting to go 'green'. You're a young person and I think the earth depends on young people to lead the way in saving the planet. I'm wondering if thinking of ways to save yourself, might help you with the anxiety.
In the summer, grocery stores here stopped giving plastic bags for free, so most people use fabric or plastic bins. We all need to do our small part, which will add up and make a big difference in our planets future. We can't think sticking our heads in the sand will make it go away. Maybe you can think of what you can do to save the planet. This will give you a feeling of control which may help calm the anxiety. I always feel better when I have some control. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I seen it. I liked it. It did'nt scare me. 2012 scares me more. But the whole global warming thing don't. I belive it is happening but I see alot of people just here in this little town doing things to be greener. And everyday the government and others are coming up with new ways to reward people who do their part. I also think that the show last night was a worst case scenario of what could happen not what will happen. Besides I'll be gone by then. So will my kids and mabye my grandkids.

We are all going to die. The sun, a star, will die out one day and life on earth as we know it will be gone. Everything comes to an end. That is reality.
The biggest problem on earth is that there are too many people. All the other problems stem from that - over population. The root of anxiety about TV programs like that is our fear of death. We will all die. We should die. We could not sustain a planet where no one died. Science keeps trying to find ways for people to live longer and longer lives. This is not practical. We all need to think through things a bit more thoroughly and realistically. If science becomes so successful in keeping us all alive, we'll have to start setting a cut off point on the age to which people can live! As I get older and the doc prescribes more and more pills for me, I think, "So I'm taking lipitor to prevent a heart attack or stroke... so I can die of... CANCER?!!!"

I disagree- global warming is a fact & so is our diminishing water supply. I'm pretty educated about this stuff. We will be feeling the effects in our lifetimes- we already are - but even if we wouldn't, what about future generations??? Most countries are ahead of the US on this matter.
I worry about this all the time, but considering that my panic/anxiety issues will literally kill me if I don't keep myself together, & everyone on this board has the same problem, we can only do what we can as individuals to help & give us a sense of control. Not everyone is going to care or do what they can to help if they aren't required, so it's up to the gov. to implement laws, & they could use some pressure. So I just do what I can to be a responsible, good person- but I don't watch shows like that b/c I already know! I'm not familiar with the program, so I don't know whether or not it was science fiction, as someone wrote. I certainly hope that other people (who don't suffer from anxiety like we do) don't ignore those programs, though! |

Inducing fear is a great way to have power and control over others. Fear is really "in" right now. Look around. Doomsday warnings on TV and movie screens all around us. It's as old as the human race. And for those of us with anxiety disorders, it's hard to ignore. I think my cynicism is holding my anxiety at bay on this one, though. The History Channel is racking up big ratings this month with all of the end-of-world programming. Just another way for someone to make money. It's just another fad and it, too, shall pass. I've been around long enough to have seen this fad more than once. Don't let em bring you down! They're stirring the pot to stir up ratings.

I have to be really selective about what I watch on tv. Action movies are a no no and I can't watch our national sport of hockey anymore either because I can get way too excited for my own good.
Doombsday type programs don't necessarily worry me but they can get too graphic fo rme to stand sometimes. I am way too visual. eeks!! |

In my opinion those doomsday shows are just propaganda to sell electric cars and so called green light bulbs.Gore stands to make billions off of the global warming scam.I agree with you about being selective with what you watch. I used to watch CNN news a lot.I used to throw my shoes at the tv when Lou Dobbs came on.No offence to anyone that may like him.I just think he is a twit.
My doctor told me to stop reading fictional stories, and try to read non-fiction.When it comes to television I watch science channel or something educational. I still can't get over Lou Dobbs. If I saw him on the street I would pull that wig right off his head, and punch him in the gut.Sorry.....I hope I'm not being too negative. |
