Hi all-I just ordered some books from a book club without thinking of the commitment involved-they're saying I can't cancel the membership until I buy 3 more! I may just swallow the cost & trade them at the local bookstore! Has anyone else ever been caught up in something and done a compulsiver behavior without thinking?
Thanks! ![]() |

Too often!! My biggest compulsion cost me a year's subscription to something I didn't want at a price I could not afford.
Yet we still do it! ![]()

Yes, although I can't think of one in particular at the moment. I'm just an all around impulse buyer.
I think on the book club you'll have time to review your first purchases and you can return the books, write cancel on the invoice, and, voila! no more 3-more-book obligation.

Oh god, my list of these is long! And also very expensive!

Just pick the cheapest ones. It doesn't have to be something you actually like.

QVC & Homeshopping type channels and some info-mercials are aimed for impulse-buying. (I saw one for a particular line of make up recently and it's been on my mind ever since.
Don't be hard on yourself over this. *HUGS*

Oh yes, I have been impulsive before.
I know the panic it can cause. At least this isn't something major, right? |

You are so right Azalysa! They hype you up and make you hurry up and order before you realize it isn't a good product or you really don't need it or the price really isn't that good.
If you go with the book club, order all of your responsibility at the very first offer, otherwise the costs of the books you may choose from will be higher. However, in the USA you have 3 working days to cancel an order. See if you can call them and cancel now.

Sky is right about having 3 days to cancel an order in the U.S. They make it so blasted hard to contact them though. They probably won't send you a phone number or postal address until the 3 days are up, or respond to email. They use autoresponders.
I've done the same thing only worse. Late one night when my resistance was weak, I clicked on one of those ads to get a free laptop computer. I think it was an ad on this site. Anyway, I can really use a free laptop computer. So, they said all I had to do was respond to some offers from their sponsors since the way it works is the sponsors save money by having the buyers go to them and they save on advertising. Okay, so I went to the first screen and had to select two offers. They had a bunch of book clubs, and I found enough books that I was interested in or could use, so that was okay. The second screen had more book clubs and BMG, and I found more books and some music that I really wanted. The third screen required more expensive purchases. One was Discover card, and they were offering a 0% interest rate for almost a year on transferred balances, and that was something I had been thinking about doing anyway. But then there were things like insurance I didn't need, and a genealogy service that costs almost $400 for the minimum commitment, .... Nothing else that I needed or wanted, but I was so close. I picked the least expensive thing on the list, which was Vonage. They only required a one month commitment after the set-up fee. But they rejected my credit card because there was only about a month before the expiration date. I already had the new card, but hadn't activated it yet. So I activated the new card. I was so close to getting my free laptop. Activating the new card inactivated the old one, which caused my BMG signup (the one thing I really did want) to be rejected. That also meant that I didn't qualify for the free laptop. And there is no way to contact Vonage. They automatically bill my card every month, and calling them to cancel just gets a maze of computers answering the phone that is impossible to get through, and they don't respond to email, and I never found the time to send snail mail. I never even installed the thing. I didn't want it. Only got it so I could get a laptop computer. ![]() I think they have finally stopped billing my card. It's been a year. And the bookclubs are still sending stuff, and one of them didn't record my payment when I ordered several books and they sent them in two shipments. I had paid for them all at once, but they billed me again for the second shipment. Now debt collectors are calling me about it and I haven't had time to look up my statement for my card (online) to prove that I paid. It stinks. Even if I did get some books that I wanted anyway. I have plenty of experience with impulsive and stupid, and that's not nearly the worst of it. Rap

Oh, Rapunzel!!!
I knew there was more to those online ads that say "click here for a (whatever)* but didn't know just HOW much was involved!!! You poor thing....that sounds like an out and out nightmare. I don't think that type of thing should be allowed, but....as we were discussing above...guess it's the same tactic as TV infomercials. ![]() Make it sttttooppppppp..... ![]() {{{{{Rapunzel}}}}}
