I have had generalized anxiety for years now, but I think I'm developing panic attacks... I was at walmart today and I suddenly had to get out. My heart was racing and I felt really anxious and on the verge of tears... it happened last week at home, and I attributed it to some ptsd symptoms... but walmart triggered none of any that I could recognize. this is really new and scary.

what brings on sudden panic attacks when you have no history of them?

It's triggering other stuff tho, and it's not going away so well, even with anxiety meds... wtf?! I see my t tomorrow and can talk to him about this, but I was hoping to get some more immediate ideas and perspective on what in the world might be bringing this on... and maybe how to get through it? thanks...

Sometimes it can be stress related, medications that u may be on, or just general thoughts that could be nothin or you think they don't bother you.. But your brain is saying it does.

Sometimes just thinking about an attack can trigger one also. Also, caffeine , redbull, monster etc could contribute to one. Because they speed up your heart rate , and you could be fine then bam.. Can't breathe.

When having an attack I've found that using ice packs on my wrists and neck calm me down, and try to get a drink of something with a little sugar in it since your blood sugar could be low . Think happy stupid thoughts. Ponies , cats, rainbows, anything that could make you laugh or smile .

I'm not an expert on panic attacks, but I do have them. With me, I can't figure out what
triggers the anxiety. It comes on so suddenly. It is very frightening. I think it's being around too many people. I don't like crowds.

I do know a couple of things that help me. I go outside, away from the crowds. I take deep breaths and try to stay focused on breathing. Another thing is creating a distraction. Keep a small object in your pocket. When you need a distraction, reach into your pocket and touch the object. Feel it's texture, smooth or rough, bumpy or soft. Just try to keep your thoughts on that for as long as you can.Usually it is enough to get by.
I hope this helps.
