Everytime i stop being busy enough to think i start thinking about the dentist tomorrow. Its a new dentist and i hope we can figure things out... im so anxious im getting ill from it. I know i have massive cavities to get taken care of due to ventalin because of my asthma and it eats at the enamel causing me to loose several fillings and develop new cavities over the past 6 years. I havent seen the dentist since i had my wisdom teeth removed... didnt go so well, turns out freezing didnt work so well that day on me. Im having issues keeping my breathing calm. I know its just the first of several visits and im terrified. And things just keep getting worse, my sitter for my almost eight month old daughter just canceled and im going to have to bring my daughter with me.

I'm sorry, dentist, yuck. I really hate going to the dentist too.

Can you get nitrous oxide (gas)? I know it helps some (me), and others dislike it. I don't like the extra cost so I go without. This last visit (yesterday), I tried taking myself elsewhere in my mind and it worked a little. I picture myself in a green pasture type setting.

Good luck to you. Blessings.
Thanks for this!

I am extremely nervous at the dentist too...he prescribes Xanax for my appointments so I can make it through. I usually cant make it through without dissociating or crying. my dentist is very understanding and caring of my situation and takes extra care with me. just let the dentist know right off that you have extreme dental anxiety. I think they are used to it and will accommodate you. good luck.

'hope you have good dental insurance!! I went to a new dentist for a second opinion, and on the questionnaire was asked if I had any fears about going to the dentist. My first day back to college I had to stop at the dentist's (student/intern), an a 1" spring snapped while my mouth was open and dropped down my throat. Luckily I was awake and gagged it up. For that reason I never do general anesthesia. One thing I do know: if a hygienist gives the shot of novacaine, whatever, into your gums, make sure they know the dose. I will never let one do that again. My jaw was sore for 2 weeks. Just saying only the DDS docs should be giving shots of anything. I hope it goes well for you.

I agree that it helps to let the dentist know about the anxiety. The nitrous is usually not covered by insurance, but from my experience it is about $25. Not all dentists have it.

Thank you everyone... wakeing up this am and seeing all of these replies calmed me a bit. Not much but enough to be able to function.

so dental appointment was worse then i expected. I figured it was bad, having put it off for almost 8 years and being an asthmatic (causes issues with teeth). I have three appointments next week to deal with the minor cavities and one big one from a filling that popped out as well as popping all my old fillings and redoing them. Then i get to be fitted for a dental appliance! yay.... not. The dentist was nice though, i liked him, very understanding and gave me 4* my usual dose for my ativan. Hubby is going to need to take those days off, im going to be loopy but at least it will be over and done with. The dentist is also going to try to get my insurance to cover some special tools for me to take home to help with my dental hygine. So happy about that but i can just imagine how my anxiety level is going to climb. They are also going to get this wand thing approved for me so i dont need to get the freezing via needle!

I'm sorry it was worse than you expected but it sounds like you handled it well. Also, very important and crucial is that you like your dentist.
